Iraq may hold twice as much oil
Ft..Com ^ | 18 April 2007 | Ed Crooks

Iraq could hold almost twice as much oil in its reserves as had been thought, according to the most comprehensive independent study of its resources since the US-led invasion in 2003.

The potential presence of a further 100bn barrels in the western desert highlights the opportunity for Iraq to be one of the world’s biggest oil suppliers, and its attractions for international oil companies – if the conflict in the country can be resolved.

If confirmed, it would raise Iraq from the world’s third largest source of oil reserves with 116bn barrels to second place, behind Saudi Arabia and overtaking Iran.

The study from IHS, a consultancy, also estimates that Iraq’s production could be increased from its current rate of less than 2m barrels a day to 4m b/d within five years, if international investment begins to flow.

That would put Iraq in the top five oil-producing countries in the world, at current rates.

Sigh.

My 20 years of working experience in the Middle East makes me want to believe you, but...

Hah, Stupid Saddam. He invades Kuwait for oil when he was sitting on an ocean of oil all along. Kinda ironic.

Despots and tyrants are utterly psychotic. It makes no sense that they spend so much time and money on their own self-aggrandizement, when a little bit of investment into infrastructure and personnel results in wealth and power beyond what petty tyrants enjoy.

But nobody ever said the world's despots were sane or even really intelligent. Most are psychologically damaged goods, and deranged to boot.

Have you considered that Saddam WAS supporting/working with terrorists. Is that what you meant by Saddam having been effective at keeping the loons under control?

Yep, Saddam exported more lunacy than he ever exported oil... But let’s not let that fact spoil your dinner of organic vegetables, transported by horse carts, grown by illegal immigrants, in a peaceful and safe environment where atheists enjoy all the same freedoms as Christians, Muslims, and Buddhists...

And I’m not talking about some place in the Middle East.

Sounds wonderful, if true. Now the place needs to be depopulated of the muzzie influence there, if we don’t have the guts to do it (putting our soldiers on trial for doing their jobs shows we don’t), then stand out of their way, and let them eliminate each other. The oil will still be in the ground.

Thank you for the ping. There are many places yet in the world that have not yet been fully explored for their oil potential, including large area in the US.
