Ishmael's Axe
http://external.oneonta.edu/cooper/articles/suny/2001suny-pikus.html ^

Posted on 04/17/2007 11:25:47 AM PDT by TexasBud

One possible source of the gunman's reference to "Ismail Ax" on inside of his arm is... James Fenimore Cooper's The Prairie. Character Ishmael Bush had an axe. "And the axe, which created and transformed through destruction, clears the figurative way for the deflowering of the New World."

The axe is apparently both literal and symbolic, and references are made about the character's having moved from the east to the west, creating change through the destruction (using the axe), and the like. Just a possibility, esp. for someone who was an English major?

Cho went to Westfield High, not West Springfield High, according to ABCNews article and they are the Bulldogs, not the Spartans.

Karl Rove put the tatoo on him as a distraction. Now gun control will be part of the 2008 debate, notwithstanding the Dim’s strategy of silence of the issue.

Both Jewish and Islamic traditions consider Ishmael (Abraham’s illegitimate son) as the ancestor of Arab people.

The main thing about his "play" is that it's awful, childish garbage. There IS no imagination, empathy, love of words (except very unimaginative profanity), and no story. It's nonsense. There is no characterization, no plot, no description.

You're right. Why this didn't get an NEA grant a long time ago is a mystery to me.

>One reason I didn’t think he was writing about other people was the play lacks multiple perspectives on the action.<

Of course, you may be right. I guess I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. As a writer, he might have been so into the character that he wanted to put the victim’s experience into the forefront.....I don’t know. I wonder if they will interview his parents, and sister, and if we will be appraised of it if they do.

His forehead, the skin condition on his forehead, the hairline and eyebrows are a match. He’s a bit chubbier and not smiling in the later picture (could be he wasn’t on meds then).

You know: it’s a very predictable path.

Listen to leftist profs in your English classes railing about materialism, capitalism, etc., etc. You look at Islam, and it has everything: anti-Americanism, thoughtless ritual, an oppressed people, immunity from society regarding any bad behavior, etc., etc.

It’s easy for a leftist or a proto-leftist to find common cause with Islam and it wouldn't surprise me if this guy was nothing more than a standard socialist English major pompous yahoo who found Islam to be "cool" and rebellious.

ISMAIL AK

Dr. ISMAIL AK is a Professor of Psychiatry at a university in Turkey. His research interests include the following:

Personal Disorders, Agresivve behavior and self-mutilation, ECT, Substance-related disorders, Sexual Disorders, Forensic Psychiatry, Sleep Disorders

From the Turkish Association of Psychopharmacology website:

President-elect:
Professor Ismail AK, M.D. Head, Department of Psychiatry, KTU School of Medicine, Trabzon, Turkey
Ismail AK is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Head, Department of Psychiatry, KTU School of Medicine, Trabzon, Turkey
He is an experienced on clinical psychopharmacology of schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.

Dr. Ismail Ak is one of the authors of an article about patients with mental disorders, psychotic features, etc.:

As regards pharmacotherapies, 354 (50.2%) were given antidepressants. . . . Among antidepressants, Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were 72.8%. . . .

This is an abstract of an article co-written by Dr. ISMAIL AK:

Even though all psychiatric disorders do not have the same potential with regard to committing a crime, the number of individuals having psychiatric disorders is gradually going up depending on the increase of crimes and violent behaviors committed in a society. . . . The relation between existence of psychiatric disorder and crime behavior has been significantly emphasized in several earlier studies. In conclusion, it is notable that the rates of committing crime for the individuals with psychiatric disorders are on the rise.

Dr. Ismail Ak is apparently one of the world's leading experts on the psychiatry of antisocial and suicidal behavior, psychotic and bipolar disorders, psychopharmacological therapy, etc.

The young man had been noticed to be disturbed and had been referred to counseling. Dr. Ismail Ak is an expert and author in the particular field most directly related to the guy's disorder.

So it's possible that the writing on the guy's arm said

ISMAIL AK

and the K was written in a way that people *thought* it said

ISMAIL AX

That seems more likely to me than a connection to Moby Dick or to Islamic terrorism.

This is an angle the investigators need to pursue with the school's counseling service, the killer's computer, and Dr. Ismail Ak himself.
