Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney says that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is wrong when she contends that "it takes a village" to raise a child, though he told a newspaper in 1998 that Clinton was "very much right."
Critics have cited reversals on positions as Romney runs for president, including support for abortion rights and gun control. He recently called himself a lifelong hunter but later acknowledged making few hunting trips that required a license.
During a speech to New Hampshire Republicans last weekend in which he touted the need for strong American families, the former Massachusetts governor said, "I think it's time for us to recognize every child deserves a mother and a father."
Asked by The Associated Press after the speech if he disagreed with Clinton's view, expressed in her 1996 book "It Takes a Village," that raising children requires a community-wide effort, Romney said he disagreed and added, "It takes a family."
However, in 1998, Romney told The Boston Globe: "Hillary Clinton is very much right, it does take a village, and we are a village and we need to work together in a non-skeptical, no-finger-pointing way."
On Monday, Romney's campaign said his Globe comments were about public-private partnerships, not families. Romney was referencing corporations, not parents, the campaign said.
A Clinton spokeswoman said she was not surprised by Romney's latest remarks.
"To be safe, you might want to wait and ask him again tomorrow," Clinton spokeswoman Kathleen Strand said. "He tends to change his positions pretty often."

OUCH
Gotta try to earn your criticism PING. ;o)
Unlike Mrs. Clinton...er...well....
What is it with these guys from Massachusetts who can’t make their mind up about anything?
Hillary is consistent. Consistently a socialist. Mitt’s learning to be a conservative.
I had no idea he had previously endorsed It Takes a Village, did you?
“He tends to change his positions pretty often.” - 4 years ago that used to be said about Kerry all the time.
I think they have the same barber....er, make that stylist.
Doesn’t really surprise me. He was for it before he was against it.
Now really, what exactly is the problem here? < /sarcasm>
Truth be told, mitt is better than the other big two, IMO. But not by much. He says lotsa conservative things now, but he’s had to flop like a beached trout to get there.
Ouch is correct - If this guy doesn’t change his “strategery”, he would be Kerried out of this race.
Why even address that question and if he is going to, instead of changing his tune, he should know how to spin his original answer so that it jives with whatever he is pedalling now.
At the risk of reading too much in this stupid story, I have to say, I am going put him on “slow” list.
A Republican, not quick on his feet, is bound to fall miserably in this race. That is why, my first and only choice is Fred Thompson. He would fire his Southern Zingers wrapped in sweet-talk and take out Hitlary and company and they wouldn’t even know they got taken out.
If FT doesn’t get nomination, then I won’t feel too bad about RJ. He would lose the South (our base) as well, but he would be good for series sweep of debates and get under Hitlary’s skin to the point where she would be forced to turn off her ‘sane-person-cloaking-device’.
Yep, I won’t be supporting any of those top three in the primaries.
We’d better make sure we get a good strong candidate and FAST!
Why on earth would he have thought to endorse it back then. He musta been a lib, is my only answer.
Working my tail off for the ONLY man in the race, DH.
i can't wait for a whole election year full of grade-school level campaign dialogue. world of grunts.
Romney changes his views again ... by the way ... I watched that show Big Love ... pretty good ... how many wives does Romney have ... :>)
You know that I support Duncan Hunter, but some of the the pubbies here are afraid that republican ideals cannot win the day, so they won’t back him. They think it’s all about popularity and a slick persona....and the saddest thing about it is they are probably right.
I don’t know! When did our party quit standing on principals? :(

Romney has really only flip-flopped on one issue of consequence, abortion. The other so-called flip-flops, including this one, are attacks by the MSM who take things out of context to make them seem contradictory.
He was a gun grabber too. Now he claims he’s a lifetime NRA member.
