A rumor circulating in Diwaniya holds that some tribal leaders in the Diwaniya area may have called for the US to intervene in the area after they were unable to respond to the actions of the Mahdi Army, Slogger sources report.
The Diwaniya security plan, launched ten days ago has triggered heavy fighting between Mahdi Army members and US and Iraqi forces. The US maintains a tight security cordon around the city and house-to-house searches and arrests continue.
The security operations are codenamed Black Eagle and are implemented in wide areas around Diwaniya by US forces based in Camp Echo and the Eighth Division of the Iraqi Army, headquartered in Diwaniya.
Slogger sources in the city report that tribal leaders may have been unable to arrest the growing power of the Mahdi Army in the city. Even the larger tribes in the area were unable to secure the release of relatives abducted by Mahdi Army members, local sources report.
