There was a feller in Neal Stephenson's
Snowcrash who rode around on a motorcycle with a nuke in the sidecar, set to go off if it ever stopped receiving a signal that his heart was beating.

They were purely a defensive measure, thus did not need to be discriminating.There would usually be a single target attacking the ship so there would be no need to worry about innocents being injured. Nobody on the attacking ship could or should be considered innocents.

laz, I would posit that these two need to be added to list one as each of these on a 3 round burst would no more jeopardize innocents than a series of shots from a rifle would. Some machine guns/pistols have a lower velocity than many rifles.
