This is pretty much how it goes over here non stop coverage. The bottom line seems to be a sarcastic, "they will never learn, they will never change, they will never eliminate this from their society".
DONT KILL THE MESSENGER FOLKS. I am just objectively reporting how this is coming down overseas in terms of America's image. Like it or not, accurate or not, this is the strong image being portrayed. Most people I talk to feel real bad about all those dead students, but they also hint that Americans are stupid to let it keep happening. At least that is what I hear here. The news reports also said President Bush was very very shaken up and so was/is the whole nation together.
Screen shot from live Japanese TV today:
Here are graphics now on the generally conservative, pro-US Chosun Ilbo daily, showing the VT shooter (envisioned), as well as the terrible litany of recent school shootings throughout the United States.
I think the coverage in South Korea is probably consistent with that of Japan and elsewhere in Asia. You can sense a kind of "What is wrong with the Americans"? Is their question it seems.
Hold your fire, folks, I am merely showing you what image it is being made out there, and how outrageous massacre is being covered abroad, where people are also in shock and amazement (many people have their kids in US schools as well, I think there is something like 2000 South Koreans at VT, and a nearly equal amount of Chinese, and exactly 201 Japanese--A Japanese Cabinet Minister went on live Japanese TV this afternoon to report to the nation that all its nationals were safe in Virginia):
No problem here. There isn't a society on earth that doesn't feel that in some way it's better than everyone else.
THANKS MUCH.
It’s interesting—the contradictions.
Their organized crime/mob stuff all over Asia can make a given target more than unsafe, doomed. But somehow, that’s excused as reasonable and normal. LOL.
Nevertheless, collectivist cultures do have more forces toward unity etc.—at least on the surface but also to some degree genuinely.
