It's illegal for Baffoe-Bonnie to possess firearms because he was in the U.S. on a student visa.

So, if it is illegal to possess guns while in the US on a student visa how can it be legal to buy guns while in the US on a student visa?

LET ME PUBLICALLY AMMEND SOMETHING THERE.

While a GREEN CARD, permanent residence in the USA can purchase and have a weapon, under federal law, the possessor of an F-1 STUDENT VISA is NOT given the privilege.

Looks like it's sufficient to be legally here regardless of class of visa, so says an ATF FAQ.
