This is a state matter and if the state needs help the feds could give it to them. All of that could be covered in a press release. By having a press conference, the white house is just opening up the debate for more gun laws.
I agree with you, but since the administration's Katrina PR debacle, I suspect they'll be holding showy press conferences everytime two sparrows collide midair.
