If there can be a silver lining to this, is that Universities will take security much more seriously before a real organized attack by Al-Qaeda takes place.

I don't see that as a silver lining at all but an overreaction. I do see how turning universities into lock downed facilities is a step forward.

Sometimes bad things just happen to good people. By living our lives in a bunker type mentality, what sort of lives would we have?

I’m not suggesting a bunker-type mentality, but at least being a little more aware, and having campus security keeping a closer eye on things, and at least realize that the threat is there.
