Greener governor seen as rootless
His inconsistencies on environment befuddle activists.

By Kevin Yamamura - Bee Capitol Bureau Published 12:00 am PDT Sunday, April 15, 2007

In the latest issue of Outside magazine, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wears an untucked green shirt and jeans, posing as a champion of the environment. He sits on a rock surrounded by a squirrel, rabbit and other creatures of the forest.

All while wearing his trademark boots made of dead animal skins.

Schwarzenegger has suddenly become an international global warming hero, albeit one with a penchant for Hummers and alligator boots.

California environmentalists still aren't entirely sure what to make of him.

They praise Schwarzenegger for getting the public to focus on greenhouse gas emissions and using his political celebrity to shift national debate in a green direction. They say the governor has scored major accomplishments by signing a bill to reduce emissions 25 percent by 2020 and pursuing new alternative fuel requirements.

But they have misgivings about the governor's past opposition to top environmental priorities. They say the governor has focused on long-term plans that may not require real sacrifices for years. Yet he has opposed more immediate environmental solutions as too costly to businesses.

"It seems to me his (modus operandi) is to say people don't have to sacrifice right now," said Rico Mastrodonato, Northern California director of the League of Conservation Voters. "He's saying they can have their cake and eat it, too."

The governor this week framed the environmental problem as one that can be solved by technology rather than changes in lifestyle. In speeches at Georgetown University and the Council on Foreign Relations, he described how he wants to turn environmentalism into an inclusive cause rather than one fueled by guilt.

This is on the front page of my Sacramento BEE. I ask you Republicans... Is he "rootless," or just plain ruthless?

I hate to tell the environmentalists but alligators aren't endangered anymore...they're a plain nuisance these days...eating dogs, cats, kids and all.

They are regularly farmed. I’ve got a ten foot gator head from I75 in my shed.

I voted for Arnold by accident. I thought I was voting for Buchanan.

But he did buy carbon offsets to counteract the damage his carbon emissions are doing to the environment. What more can he do?

Arnold's brand of environmentalism is using technology to stave off environmental harm without overly raising costs or expecting people to sacrifice their lifestyle. The changes he wants don't go as far as the extreme Left would like to see.

Here is a little bit of my take on all this horse-pucky:

If we correlate the per capita emissions of CO2 with the national income per capita we can get a very crude relationship between the standard of living in one country to another assuming the higher number demonstates more goods, services, etc., which use the additional energy. In 2002 the US per capita emissions of CO2 annually was 19.4839 tons per 1,000 persons. Reducing that by 80% would mean those 1,000 persons would be producing 3.89678 tons annually. In that year Romania produced 4.06309 tons per 1,000 and Jamaica produced 3.77182 tons.

So by reducing our per capita emissions of CO2 could possibly place the US in the neighborhood of Romania and Jamaica in national income. The average of these two countries national income in 2002 was 2,190.84. In 2002 the US national income per capita was 33,070.30. The only advantage I see to living in Jamaica is relaxing on the beach.

As an extreme usage of statistics ask how many of the people screaming to reduce CO2 by 80% would accept their standard of living to be reduced by 100 - (2190.84 / 33070.30) = 93.4%.

The datum come from the web site:
http://www.nationmaster.com/index.php";

I can just see California dropping to the living standard of Romania.

Yeah the most drastic cuts don't come before 2020. The law may be quietly repealed before then as politicians are not in the habit of inflicting pain on the voters.

This is why I continually flame him for his totally erroneous statement that "it's not either/or on the environment versus the economy." He, like many of the deceptive type of political operatives desperately wants you to believe that stupid sophistry!

Just one reading of the volumnous book "Trashing the Economy," puts that shallow celebrity politicians statement right in the dumper where it really belongs in perpetuity!

He wants us all to believe we really can have our cake and eat it too and he's more than wrong from the get-go!

They want you to believe you can be a conscientious environmentalist and still live the way you do. They never bother to explain how you can curtail global warming without harming the economy or asking people to relinquish the conveniences of everyday life.

Bull.

The changes he wants don't go as far as the extreme Left would like to see.

No one can out-pander the Slave Party when it comes to pleasing the left. It's why Republicans shouldn't try to please the greens. They should instead portray them as the corporate crooks they are and show how private habitat management can produce superior results at a lower price to the taxpayer.

Are you saying that carbon offsets are not the answer. Please understand that there are a lot of perfectly good liberals making an excellent living selling these things. You wouldn't want to deprive them of their livelihood, would you?

Arnold is another elitist that has married into an elitist family that simply want to fool you so they can rule you!!!

Your analysis is precisely correct. It is Commonistic Socialism in an effort to "bring it all down man," like the Berkeley protester howled in the 1970's.

They want America and Americans brought down to the lowest common denominator as the ultimate in "Social Justice" through what you'll now hear them calling "Environmental Justice!"

This is also why they want to pull the rug out from under the war. They are just sick the 500 Billion Dollars have gone to fight "freedom fighters" whose only sin in their eyes is to try to bring the USA down just like they are, for "Economic and Social Justice!"

The former environmental minister of Canada has said words to the effect that: even if global warming being caused by human activity is a total farce, it's still useful in bringing about economic and social justice in the world!

So, yes, you are right! It is all "horse-pucky!" And just as stinky!!!

When it comes to the American people, and especially the Cauleeforneeun pipple, it does no good to complain or explain!

First, they don't want to hear it and second, they don't believe it anyway!!!

While working as a corrections officer (prison guard) in the mid-sixties, I met many, many "edge men" who were hustling cigarettes in there because they had been selling concepts that weren't even as bogus as "these things!"

And as you know, there isn't much "livelihood" can be bought with boxes of cigarettes in a prison unless you like preverted sex!!!
