It is ironic that Paul Wolfowitz, the president of the World Bank, has found himself under pressure, with his job on the line, for an apparent case of nepotism involving his girlfriend.
Some, of course, will insist that Mr. Wolfowitz's behaviour was corrupt and that he should be fired. Whatever decision the World Bank board eventually takes against him, perhaps this weekend, his reputation will have suffered. And if he stays, it will be from a weakened position that he will be able to lecture countries and their leaders, especially in the Third World, against corruption. -SNIP-
There is a whiff in the affair of the caricatured Third-World official, against whom Mr. Wolfowitz was campaigning.

Never dip your pen in the company ink.
193k.. ‘never dip the pen in company ink’
Is it ironic that somehow he felt that this was acceptable?
He's been cleaning up corruption and the Euroasswipes won't have it.
This has been in the making since he took the oath....
The timing of this hit was just before a major get together of the world bank....not coincidental.
This whold story is icky. I have met Wolfowitz on a couple of occasions and he is not my idea of a dream date. He is very smart, but not exactly lady-killer material.

193 thousand doesn't go as far as it use to!
She looks like a million lira
Is he another one of Bush’s good ole boys?
The World Bank board ethics committee saw nothing wrong with this a year ago and now they are screaming just in time for the big annual meeting?
Stinks of politics. Wolfie is doing something right over there at commie World Bank.
Aww come on - it’s not his looks that are a problem, it’s his arrogance and snobbishness and selfishness that are a problem.
He’s always in it for himself and he’s made his personal obsession with Iraq the whole country’s war with thousands dead. It was he who snookered Bush into this, he who got the whole world to hate us, and he who gave out the incompetent assessments of how easy it would all be. We’re still paying for all of this.
Now it’s a loss, the war’s a very hard one to win, and he’s installing the AFRICA model of development on it, via world bank billions, oblivious to the fact that if you heap well-heeled money onto Iraq in the same way as was heaped onto Africa, you will get the same result as Africa! He’s making his own big mess in Iraq even bigger with his world bank presidency.
If you ask me, it’s mighty suspicious that he’s all focused on Iraq, a warzone where no lending should be taking place at all and according to rules, it shouldn’t be, and heaping the US taxpayer’s aid billions once again on Iraq except that it’s being done by his $200,000 a year taxfree bureaucrats who are as arrogant as their salaries but twice as leftwing. IMHO.
What makes it even worse is that as he’s focusing on Iraq and its worthless crazy Muslims as his sacred cause, he’s kowtowing to the politically correct crowd in every other matter. He’s bowing down to the god of Bono’s Africa, he’s installing carbon credits to raise costs and impoverish the west, and he’s abused the United States for wanting a border wall with Mexico, a rule-of-law issue if there ever was one. He’s got a flaming liberal record at the Bank outside the Iraq obsession and i think he’s doing that as a smokescreen to get along with the staff so that his real work, heaping money on Iraq, and its Chalaby crowd, Africa-style, will continue. I really think he should go.
Put John Bolton over there instead!
No, he hasn’t. Name one instance of where he has. There is nothing but talk and favoritism of funding for his pet countries. He’s actually been adding to the corruption.
I am not certain of that, he moved his girlfriend to remove impropriety, I think the problem is in her huge pay increase, which he does not control, but did pull strings to get her the position.
OK, if he removed her to remove impropriety, how is it she gained more than if she’d never been in an office romance with Paul? Whatever you want to call it, it was taking advantage of a situation for personal gain. He was directly responsible for the taxfree $60,000 pay increase, he literally dictated it, probably at the girl’s direction. And it was hugely against the WB rules and no one else got such a deal - a 32% pay hike! Then he tried to hide it. But a boyfriend always wants to please a girlfriend and that’s just somehow how this turned out. As for her ruined career, my butt, how is it that association with Liz Cheney on the hugely central topic of iraq is a career-killer? If association with neocons was this terrible punishment duty and career killer, why was she LITERALLY in bed with Paul Wolfowitz? The girlfriend made some personal choices and sought to leverage them for her additional personal advantage. She led Paul around by the nose on this and he was so lovestruck he allowed it.
Your comments are mainly opinion and NOT backed up by the facts. Please do some research on this before you post any more opinions that are at odds with the facts. Here is a short version (and yes, from memory, so please look it up yourself to verify the fine details): Wolfowitz was already in a relationship with this woman BEFORE he took the position (so it was NOT an “office romance”); he brought the relationship up himself BEFORE he took the position — AND he refused to take the position until there was a resolution on this. The resolution (recommended by the bank itself and reviewed and signed off on later by the bank’s ethics committee) was a pay increase plus a promotion plus a transfer to an outside organization. This was all decided on in advance. What was not decided was the amount of pay increase. Wolfowitz more than once asked to be recused from these decisions, but it was finally dumped in his lap. I would agree that the size of the pay increase was a lapse in judgment, but it was not something to hang him over.
yikes, not smokin’ hot. Based on her lack of hotness, he should be fired.
Were you there in the sheets with them?
was a lapse in judgment........
My are we the apologist for stupidity, and much more.. read the above post.
If you think that that salary does not raise eyebrows with the public, and if this doesn’t undermine the GOP, your in denial.
Don’t be ridiculous. I know what the facts are. The problem is your interpretation of the facts, which is highly biased in favor of a corrupt human being just because he’s YOUR corrupt human being.
Number one, Wolf disclosed the office romance upon his appointment. If you don’t call a man who’s in love with a Muslim girlfriend AT HIS WORKPLACE an office romance, then the point is irrelevant. We do not disagree on this, you are just nitpicking in order to bring up that Wolf disclosed his relationship. That’s fine but it doesn’t mean he didn’t try to get her some fancy advantages afterward as a taxfree $60000 will tell. Don’t pretend that didn’t happen. It did.
Your facts are flamingly wrong on the fat illegal 32% salary increase, which was personally dictated by wolf as well the illegal promotion. The bank board offered an either or proposition, either a salary increase OR, repeat, OR, a promotion. Wolf decided - against the board’s advice, to hog it all, Having It All, just like the original conflict of interest itself, having your honey on the phone and having your honey in the bedroom too. ain’t that nice?
And the $60000 fat taxfree illegal salary increase was dictated by wolfowitz himself, too. Go read the FT for the facts on this, it’s updating the scandal by the hour. Paul Wolfowitz is a corrupt creep and needs to be fired. Right now it looks like he will be. If he isn’t, he’ll be a eunuch in the hands of the board and we’ll get the lovely treat of watching him sing soprano about global warming, the evils of the border wall, sacred Bono africa, carbon credits, and every other leftwing cause under the sun. We don’t need a guy like that representing us, we have plenty of leftists in that setting already. we need a rightist who believes in capitalism and paul just plain doesn’t. He’s the reason we’ve lost the war, and he’s now going to be europe’s leftist pupppet all for the sake of his own paycheck. The guy has no principles whatsoever.

You aren’t the moderator or owner here, so buzz off. i see your type all the time. Sexist male intimidation doesn’t work on me, bucko.
