(AP) A car bomb exploded Saturday in a bus station in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, killing at least 56 people, police and hospital officials said.
More than 70 people were also wounded in the attack, according to an official at Al-Hussein Hospital. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.
"The explosion was a huge one. It took place in a crowded area," said Khalid al-Daami, head of the city's security committee. Among the dead were several women and children, he said.
State television aired footage from the scene, in which rescue workers could be seen evacuating casualties. The charred body of a child laid motionless on a stretcher.
Hundreds of people swarmed around ambulances, crying out and pounding their chests in grief.
The attack occurred about 200 yards from the Imam Hussein shrine, where the grandson of Islam's Prophet Muhammad is buried — one of the most important sites for Shiites.
Witnesses said as many as 15 ambulances rushed to the area, and police were firing into the air to disperse crowds and clear roads for emergency vehicles.
Karbala lies 50 miles south of Baghdad, and is the destination of an annual Shiite pilgrimage. Hundreds of Shiite faithful were killed traveling back and forth to the city during this year's pilgrimage, which took place last month.

There is no technological solution to the problem; it can only be resolved by sufficiently hard attitudes towards the vermin perpetrating these acts.
I would think that the more violent they get the more desperate they are. If the surge was not working they would be content to ride it out. But I think they know their time is limited, and worse still they know our time is limited. The opposition has made it very clear to our enemies that violence and mayhem on their side. The MSM has shown repeatedly that they will trumpet any attack in the worst possible words and pictures to the world.
The biggest plus in all of this that finally the locals are getting fed up with the minority calling the shots and making such a PITA of themselves. Sounds like here in the US!

There is little doubt that this is a short term tragedy and loss
But people should realize that this monstrous behavior does more to indict Al Qaeda, the Islamic militants, and objectionists of Iraq. It creates a solid culture where Iraqis want to reject Islamic constitutions and move in a more secular direction. It makes them want to sign up for police duty that cooperates with Coalition authorities.
The Iraqis will defeat this monstrosity and it will be the decisive beginning of the end for the Islamist agenda in the World.

I think it is past time to call Muslim Terrorists cowards and condemn them. They need to be forcefully identified as such by ALL citizens of ALL countries and condemned. MSNBC, ABC,NBC,CBS, CNN, BBC and the likes are enabling these Muslim Terrorist bastards by their own cowardice (protecting their reporters a la Eason Jordan of CNN) and hatred for Western Civilization. We should not worry about "feelings"....and have an orchestrated effort at embarrassing these Muslims who do such (homicide bombings, killing of innocent civilians, seeking shelter and refuge behind women and children in their homes).
I have long thought the act of doing this would goad them into different behavior......while at the same time isolating them (in the back of the minds) of their women...
Of course our MSM act as if they have scored the winning TD in the super bowl each time they set off any type of bombing (no matter how many innocent civilians are killed). It is without question that the MSM do this in SUPPORT of these terrorists....to no other word but "help" them on their side of this war....
