Rutgers coach says Imus' apology accepted

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The Rutgers University women's basketball coach said Friday her players have accepted radio host Don Imus' apology for racist and sexist comments toward the team and they are "in the process of forgiving."

"We still find his statements to be unacceptable, and this is an experience that we will never forget," said coach C. Vivian Stringer.

Imus met with the Rutgers athletes Thursday night hours after CBS fired him for calling the players "nappy-headed hos" in a broadcast last week. (Watch Stringer discuss what happens next Video)

"These comments are indicative of greater ills in our culture," Stringer said. "It is not just Mr. Imus, and we hope that this will be and serve as a catalyst for change."

She said it was time for Americans "to all hold ourselves to a higher standard."

"I personally am looking forward to joining forces with other people who want to bring about change for the right reasons," the coach said.

The decision to accept Imus' apology was the result of a vote taken at the end of the meeting, a source who was at the session said Friday.

The source said some of the players spoke to Imus and his wife, who was crying, and asked "Why us?"

"Because the players played rough," the source said Imus replied.............[snip]

Sharpton: 'No champagne bottle popping'

[snip]...."We cannot afford a precedent established that the airwaves can be used to commercialize and mainstream sexism and racism. But there will be no champagne bottle popping by those of us involved in this. This is not about gloating."

You know, I generally considered the Rutgers team to be innocent bystanders in the Imus train-wreck... just the poor unfortunates that he chose to pick on. But after listening to this coach a couple of times, I have no respect for her (and maybe not even her team) anymore. With her whiny, attention-getting blather and focus on woe-is-me victimization, I can safely predict her team will never win it all. They don't have the character (at least not if they are following her example!). A class act would have said that Imus was an idiot, his statements don't define me, and moved on. Instead this sobbing attention-whore is reveling in her newfound "relevance"...

They were going to accept the apology. That’s why Jesse Jackass and Al Sharpton rushed to have a meeting at CBS just hours before Imus met with the team.

This is the age of victimization, intervention, and counseling. What you describe was for a hardier time.

Since Imus is fired I don’t see why he should pay them unless they sue and win. I doubt he did pay.

Yeah.

Give each "victim" a check for five grand, a case of Fred Imus salsa, and two jugs of Diedra's floor scrub and we be COOL!

Personally, I love the sh*t out of all of this. The left has eaten one of it's own. It's apparent that Imus thought his Apology Tour was going to render him bulletproof, but the fangs stayed out.

It's gonna be verrrry interesting what he might have to say about "his side" if and when he ever gets back on the air. I hope he's learned TWO important lessons - (1) watch yo' mouf I-man and (2) know your friends.

Nifong, Sharpton, Jackson, Imus, Clinton, Obama, Kerry, Polosi. What do they all have in common? Doesn’t it make one ashamed to keep this kind of company? How can anyone in their right mind associate with any one of them?

You can't predict anything about this team anymore than you've pointed out a single thing wrong with anything this coach has said.

They truly were victims in this affair. And did not deserve to be insulted in such a degrading manner on the national stage. These people did nothing wrong.

You're exactly right. Why did they meet with him? Why didn't they just dismiss him as a jerk and ignore it?

So the Rutgers BB team members and coach are saying that Sharpton and Jackson don’t speak for them?

"These comments are indicative of greater ills in our culture," Stringer said. "It is not just Mr. Imus, and we hope that this will be and serve as a catalyst for change."

She said it was time for Americans "to all hold ourselves to a higher standard."

"I personally am looking forward to joining forces with other people who want to bring about change for the right reasons," the coach said.

Joining forces to bring about 'change'? Joining forces with whom ($10 says the name begins with Rev.)? Shouldn't she be concentrating on winning next year, not being a 'catalyst for change'?

Sorry, but every quote I've seen from this woman is filled with PC BS and wild aspersions that the actions of one idiot are somehow representative of America as a whole. Who does she think she is to generalize as to what Americans (meaning white Americans) think, feel, or express? She's become another race-pimp, just like Sharpton. And she deserves equal derision...
