Should have used an air rifle. I have a German one that can hit as hard as a .22 rifle, with less noise than slamming the door. We no longer have a jackrabbit problem. I've also used it on a rattlesnake. If we had feral cats making pests of themselves, I would certainly dispatch them quickly and humanely as well.
I'm not advocating shooting anyone's pets, but feral cats are a nuisance and a disease vector for toxoplasmosis, and ought to be done away with whenever possible.

I know a guy, who knows a guy, who uses a .22 air rifle to dispatch nuisance animals on his property, feral cats being the most damaging ones.
