GIULIANI CONVENES IMMIGRATION COALITION ON ELLIS ISL.TO FIGHT FEDS ANTI-IMMIGRANT LEGISLATION ('97)
NYC.gov ^ | Jan 9, 1997 | Rudy Giuliani

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined a cross section of New Yorkers on Ellis Island to announce the creation of an Immigration Coalition that will mount a public education campaign to the vital contributions immigrants make to our nation and to overturn recently enacted federal anti-immigrant legislation and policies.

The Mayor was joined by members of the Coalition, which includes business leaders, educators, writers, artists and representatives of community and immigration organizations from virtually every ethnic community in America. Representing the Coalition at the press conference were Manuel Matos, executive director of the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights, Dennis Walcott, president of the New York Urban League, renowned mezzo soprano Teresa Stratas, and bestselling author Frank McCourt.

"What better place to launch our campaign for the rights of immigrants than here on Ellis Island, the golden door through which millions of immigrants passed on their way to a new life in a new land," Mayor Giuliani said. "I want to thank the concerned Americans and New Yorkers and the 63 community and ethnic organizations who have stepped forward to be in the vanguard of a nationwide campaign to defend immigrants and immigration as vital to the economy and spirit of America."

To underline how important immigrants are to New York City, Mayor Giuliani and City Planning Commission Chairman Joseph B. Rose released The Newest New Yorkers, 1990-1994, a comprehensive report which outlines immigration trends in New York City during the first five years of the decade when 563,000 legal immigrants arrived in the city. (See Mayoral Press Release 016-97 for details of the report.)

The Immigration Coalition's first order of business will be to call on Congress and the President to repeal provisions of the recently enacted welfare and immigration laws that discriminate against immigrants. On October 11, 1996 the City of New York filed suit in United States District Court against the federal government and its provisions concerning immigrants. The City continues to press the court case.

According to Mayor Giuliani, New York City will also be hosting a national immigration conference early this spring to plan a national strategy to fight the widespread cuts in benefits to legal immigrants. Mayors and County Executives from localities with large immigrant populations will be invited.

"The U.S. accepts over 700,000 legal immigrants every year," the Mayor said. "We invite them here to create better lives for themselves and their families and the overwhelming majority of them take great advantage of their new opportunity. In return for the privileges of American residence, immigrants pay federal , state and local taxes at the same rate as American citizens. Under the new laws, the federal government will now largely abandon them if they experience the same problems and difficulties some American citizens face. Withholding these benefits from immigrants , who are here legally and whose taxes help pay for these very programs, is arguably unconstitutional and certainly unfair."

Approval ratings mean far less than disapproval ratings.

People will often approve of someone they know little about.

Disapproval comes from those with knowledge of a reason to do so.

Notice in that poll which Republican has the highest Dis rating.

My fave Rudy moment was the story that he called Carolyn McCarthy up after the Empire State Building shooting in 1997 inviting her to come to a presser calling for more federal gun control laws. Rudy actively courts liberal activists to join him, not just vice versa.

After his reaction to the Empire State Building shooting, his supporters still want us to believe that Rudy would not exploit a terrorist attack using scary-looking guns to call for draconian federal restrictions on such.

Just like he can say the confederate flag is a state issue and all of a sudden he's a charter member of the Federalist Society, his past actions all forgotten and forgiven.

“My fave Rudy moment was the story that he called Carolyn McCarthy up after the Empire State Building shooting in 1997 inviting her to come to a presser calling for more federal gun control laws.”

Carolyn McCarthy is the same one that is now pushing 1022, the new assault weapons ban that is far worse than the one that expired.

I wonder if Rooty helped her write it?

I see you got an early start with the Rudy bashing today. If you spent half as much time telling us why we should vote for Duncan Hunter rather than going negative on Rudy, your guy might actually improve in the polls to the 1% mark.

I wonder far less if President Rudy would sign such a bill if it came across his desk.

Or would not continue the Bush Admin position that the 2nd Amendment enumerates an individual right to bear arms.

I'm really curious how posting a factual history of something Rudy did as mayor consitutes bashing, especially when his boosters point to his tenure as mayor as his primary qualification to be president.

You hypocrites want it both ways - only his good actions as mayor should be allowed. A critical examination of the facts is bashing.

WAIT A MINUTE!!!!

This is from 1997!!!

That was the OLD Rudy Giuliani - the guy who backed Florio (Dem) and Cuomo (Dem) for governors of New Jersey and New York.

This is the NEWER, KINDER and MORE REPUBLICANER Giuliani running for President (sarcasm.)

He would not only sign it, he would call a meeting with the gun banning Rats and ask for them to send him the bill.

And suggest "improvements" - such as strict licensing of handguns. After all, those could be used by terrorists as well.

Keep it up on Rudy...People need to know who this guy is.

Have you been able to dig up the quote where he said he would refuse to enforce immigration laws? I don’t remember the context, but I believe it was after NYC lost a lawsuit about sanctuary city or something like that.

We’re such meanies, using facts against him. It’s hate, you know. H-A-T-E. I’m surprised your posts against Rudy haven’t been covered by some kind of hate crime law that Rudy wants.
