Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined a cross section of New Yorkers on Ellis Island to announce the creation of an Immigration Coalition that will mount a public education campaign to the vital contributions immigrants make to our nation and to overturn recently enacted federal anti-immigrant legislation and policies.
The Mayor was joined by members of the Coalition, which includes business leaders, educators, writers, artists and representatives of community and immigration organizations from virtually every ethnic community in America. Representing the Coalition at the press conference were Manuel Matos, executive director of the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights, Dennis Walcott, president of the New York Urban League, renowned mezzo soprano Teresa Stratas, and bestselling author Frank McCourt.
"What better place to launch our campaign for the rights of immigrants than here on Ellis Island, the golden door through which millions of immigrants passed on their way to a new life in a new land," Mayor Giuliani said. "I want to thank the concerned Americans and New Yorkers and the 63 community and ethnic organizations who have stepped forward to be in the vanguard of a nationwide campaign to defend immigrants and immigration as vital to the economy and spirit of America."
To underline how important immigrants are to New York City, Mayor Giuliani and City Planning Commission Chairman Joseph B. Rose released The Newest New Yorkers, 1990-1994, a comprehensive report which outlines immigration trends in New York City during the first five years of the decade when 563,000 legal immigrants arrived in the city. (See Mayoral Press Release 016-97 for details of the report.)
The Immigration Coalition's first order of business will be to call on Congress and the President to repeal provisions of the recently enacted welfare and immigration laws that discriminate against immigrants. On October 11, 1996 the City of New York filed suit in United States District Court against the federal government and its provisions concerning immigrants. The City continues to press the court case.
According to Mayor Giuliani, New York City will also be hosting a national immigration conference early this spring to plan a national strategy to fight the widespread cuts in benefits to legal immigrants. Mayors and County Executives from localities with large immigrant populations will be invited.
"The U.S. accepts over 700,000 legal immigrants every year," the Mayor said. "We invite them here to create better lives for themselves and their families and the overwhelming majority of them take great advantage of their new opportunity. In return for the privileges of American residence, immigrants pay federal , state and local taxes at the same rate as American citizens. Under the new laws, the federal government will now largely abandon them if they experience the same problems and difficulties some American citizens face. Withholding these benefits from immigrants , who are here legally and whose taxes help pay for these very programs, is arguably unconstitutional and certainly unfair."

What the hell is wrong with this guy?
He's a liberal.
CHARGE!!!!
He forgets we’re trying to stop illegals. Not Lars Johnsson from Denmark.
Nothing is wrong with them. They are looking for open boarders without really talking about it. If they were concerned about illegal immigration they wouldn’t be talking about all this other stuff. All they need to do is determine if these people come here illegally. The answer is obvious. Now....what are you going to do about it? Once that is taken care of, then figure out what you are going to do with the illegals that are already here. When they say they can’t ship them back, they are absolutely correct............if you don’t at least start.
I guess what I’m trying to say is......stop confusing the issue with all the other ideas until you fix the problem and stop them from coming into the country. But....you can’t even do that as long as open borders is an issue. Remember the NAU (North American Union). It is the same as the EU and it will encompass Canada, the US and Mexico. One country. They did it with Europe and it worked...but it is faultering and may not last. We don’t need to go down that road.
Keeps getting better and better with this clown. If he wins the nomination i’m going third party. No question that I can’t throw my support behind someone this liberal. If he wins the Republican party is no longer a conservative party and its time to start looking at ways to either start a new party or wrest back control from despicable RINOs like Rudy.
Rudy is just a scumbag liberal POS. He sides with the terrorists streaming across our unprotected southern border. He sides with the anit-war communists. he sides with the anti-constitution crowd.
He certainly does not deserve the vote of anyone who is pro-America. Voting for him is a vote against decent hard working, god fearing Americans.
FYI rudy’s record ping
Take me off your ping list until you can be civil in your posts. Thanks.
My post was civil, i only mentioned it was a ping about his record, but I will do as you wish.
Yeah, Rudy was a fiscal conservative.
Unless it was federal money, and then he fought tooth and nail to keep the spending going.
You should try to be less intellectually dishonest, that’s merely an approval rating, but we know you don’t have that ability.
Hell, My approval rating on FR exceeds 90%, so that make me way better than rudy.
It has nothing to do with civility.
The Rudy boosters want to be able to ignore the inconvient news flashbacks and current events. If you ping them to this stuff, they can't plead ignorance of it later.
Bianca Jagger? Carlos Santana? George Soros? Ang Lee?
In fact, Clinton supporters pointed to his approval rating to try and show that the attacks on Clinton from the right were misguided. Just like you are doing here with Rudy.
John McCain has a 57% favorable rating in the same poll as well. Your point is?
She doesn’t like me calling rudy what he really is, a POS scumbag.
Bianca Jagger? Carlos Santana? George Soros? Ang Lee?
And La Raza as well.
