Democratic politicians lose a soapbox with Imus
LA Times ^ | April 13, 2007 | Peter Wallsten

His show gave many of them a way to reach a national audience of white males -- a crucial voting bloc.

WASHINGTON — They came by the hundreds that hot August day in tiny Johnson City, Tenn., gathering on an asphalt parking lot to meet Rep. Harold E. Ford Jr. It was not just that he might become the state's first black senator. More than that, even in Republican eastern Tennessee, the Democratic congressman was a celebrity — a regular guest on Don Imus' radio show.

And today, with Imus' career in tatters, the fate of the controversial shock jock is stirring quiet but heartfelt concern in an unlikely quarter: among Democratic politicians.

That's because, over the years, Democrats such as Ford came to count on Imus for the kind of sympathetic treatment that Republicans got from Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity.

Equally important, Imus gave Democrats a pipeline to a crucial voting bloc that was perennially hard for them to reach: politically independent white men.

With Imus' show canceled indefinitely because of his remarks about the Rutgers University women's basketball team, some Democratic strategists are worried about how to fill the void. For a national radio audience of white men, Democrats see few if any alternatives.

I wish Republicans would learn how to fight. But nooooooooooo, everytime a golden opportunity like this comes flat out on a platter, Republicans have to play Florence Nightingale with the enemy.

We should be saying to the ‘Rats: “Hey, you sanctimonious F’s. ‘How does it feeeeel’, to quote a hero of yours, ‘to be gored by your own, using your directions sown, with your own bloody stones?’ Eh, you leftist hypocrites? You ready to change the rules, now that YOU face the consequences? Blowback’s a bitch, ain’t it?”

Let’s see now: Air America broke and out of business, and now Don Imus foisted on his own petard...doesn’t look like it’s been such a great ride for the democrats!HA! HA!

What a bunch of dopes - they don’t even get it. Some have to think perhaps Jackson and Sharpton are actually working for the enemy;) Saw a thread on DU that it had Rove all over it... LMAO.

As far as Rush and the likes go, what are they gonna do that is any different? Going after them that is; heck they already tried so many times. Imus was easy. He already shrunk from 200 to some 60 stations prior to this. Imus forgot who brought him to the dance some years ago.

Liberals are dumb.

“The misfortune that befell Mr. Imus when he attacked the Rutgers basketball team . . . Now, the first thing I thought was, that guy did not watch the tournament, because those women were beautiful, fast, strong,” said Clinton.

Somehow I doubt Sen. Clinton watched it either.

It's all a plot by the Rutgers University athletic department to help with recruiting women for the basketball team--now everyone thinks Rutgers won the championship game instead of losing to Tennessee. Imus played along with it not knowing they would throw him under the bus when people expressed outrage.

Maybe MSNBC can hire Nifong to replace Imus...Nifong won't have a job much longer.

“Imus forgot who brought him to the dance some years ago.”

I believe the sponsors and management were sick and tired of Imus, and he made another unheralded mistake last week. After an ad for a cold prep, he said “I tried that stuff and it didn’t work at all”. Realizing what he had done, he fudged and back-peddled.

I’ve watched him for years wondering when his greed and abuse of his broadcasting influence would do him in. Lately, he’s been trying to get a free Rolex watch. The charity (which also provided a lavish place to live) gave him free reign to shake down companies in the most brazen manner. It was really funny to watch him, but you knew he was p-ing off a lot of people.

So, there were many guns pointed at his head waiting for an excuse. I don’t see any danger at all for other talk shows.

Nor do I. All bluster, pandering, and chest thumping imo.

Good analysis btw.

Including an e-mail Mark said came from some female consort of Olberman's that was, uh, less than complimentary about his personal habits.

Olberman actually likes girls?!

I checked on the DUmmies. They’re not talking about this one at all. Funny how that works, huh? ;-)
