If the guy has three brain cells working then he has enough stashed away for himself and several generations of his kids, grand kids, great grand kids, etc. to live quite comfortably.

He isn't hurting for money. He tried to save his job because he liked the power he had and he liked being a part of the clique of the media/political elite. That's Imus' punishment for his failed joke-- the awareness that he's a nobody now who can't do anything to boost book and music sales and that he has no friends among the people he had on his show. I'm guessing Imus goes into a depression. Hell, I might. That's really a pitiful situation to find yourself in because of one stupid comment.
