According to the Bergen Record and others, Corzine's SUV had its police lights flashing. The inexperienced driver of the red truck said that's why he slowed down and swerved onto the shoulder - to let the emergency vehicle pass. Some reports said that the white truck went from the left to right lane after the red truck moved over to the shoulder in order to let Corzine's SUV pass. The red truck swerved back onto the parkway when the right wheels went off onto the soft shoulder, according to some reports, so as not to hit a milepost. The driver of the red truck oversteered to get the wheels back onto the pavement, the driver of the white truck reacted, and the rest is history. He thought he had avoided an accident, and didn't think he caused the white truck to crash into Corzine's car.

A neighbor, Linda Tizol, said Potts seemed frazzled when she saw him leaving the house Saturday morning.

“He just screamed at his Dad: ‘What do they want to lock me up for? It’s not my fault he wasn’t wearing his seat belt,’” Tizol said.

"Puzino said he advised Potts to apologize to the governor. His friend probably will do it if he gets the chance, he said."

I certainly hope Gov. Corzine recovers fully -- sounds like he has a long and difficult path ahead. We don't have all the accident facts (which rarely stops Freeper speculation) but (speculation follows) it may well be that the Gov's SUV was traveling at an excessive rate of speed for merely going to a meeting, not any genuine emergency -- (why would the pickup driver be in such a rush to get off the road unless the SUV was overtaking him very quickly?) --and are they allowed to use emergency flashing lights merely for routine transport of the Gov? Despite the terrible injuries to the Governor, it's far from clear that there's any fault on the part of the pickup truck driver -- he may have been spooked by inappropriate (illegal?) driving by the Gov's driver.... of course, hitting an unpaved shoulder at highway speeds is always a terrible idea, but the kid may have thought he was being chased off the road by emergency vehicles, and split second decisions are not always the best. If this young man had died in a roll-over due to the Gov's SUV doing excessive speed with emergency lights flashing and the Gov had been fine (especially if he'd been wearing his legally mandated seatbelt!!), the situation would look very different now even though the basic facts of the (possible) reckless driving of the Gov's SUV would be the same.
