Gov. Jon Corzine suffered leg fractures and “multiple rib fractures” in this afternoon’s crash of his SUV on the Garden State Parkway.

The governor is undergoing surgery at Cooper University Medical Center in Camden.

At a news conference this evening, Steven Ross, a trauma surgeon at Cooper, said Corzine is “stable, in the operating room having leg fractures attended to.”

Ross said that after surgery Corzine will be in the Intensive Care Unit in critical but stable condition.

Ross said the governor did not sustain head injury.

NYC 10PM news on now.

the only time you “swerve to avoid another car”, is if it cuts in front of you, or your rate of approach to it is too fast.

of course, the news is already blaming the driver of the red pickup truck. saying he pulled off the shoulder to enter the road, a second car moved into the left lane, and the governor’s Tahoe (travelling in the left lane) swerved to avoid that car.

update2 from Bloomberg:

Dr. Steven Ross, trauma director at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, said today at a press briefing:

... “It’s extremely painful, it hurts to breathe.’’...And that is the critical thing here, to make sure he has enough pain control so that he can breathe on his own without the ventilator, but not so much pain control that his mental status is depressed so he cannot breathe.’’
