CBS Fires Don Imus Over Racial Slur
CBS NEWS ^ | April 12, 2007 | STAFF

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (CBS/AP) CBS announced Thursday that it has fired Don Imus from his radio program, following a week of uproar over the radio host's derogatory comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team.

"There has been much discussion of the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly young women of color trying to make their way in this society," CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves said in announcing the decision. "That consideration has weighed most heavily on our minds as we made our decision."

It's a stunning fall for one of the nation's most prominent broadcasters. Time Magazine once named the cantankerous broadcaster as one of the 25 Most Influential People in America, and he is a member of the National Broadcaster Hall of Fame.

But Imus found himself at the center of a storm after he called members of the Rutgers team "nappy-headed hos" last week. Protests ensued, and one by one, numerous sponsors pulled their ads from Imus' show. On Wednesday, MSNBC dropped its simulcast of the program.

I heard on FOX he earned CBS $15 million in ad revenues. I read elsewhere he was paid $10 million.

Not a whole lot of profit margin there.

He was in a 3-way tie for a pathetic 17th place in the NYC morning drive time market. Then there's MSNBC and -- who listens to MSNBC in the morning??? Anyone with a job? I suspect they were looking for a way to cut him loose because he cost a lot of $$$$ but wasn't bringing in the $$$$. Betcha if he was #1 in the NYC market he'd still have a job.

If the American people cared about their country they would boycott the media. We have a liberal media what works to undermine the country because it knows it can get away with it. It’s time to shut the liberals down, starting with the media.

Dixie Chicks were done in by their fans.

Imus was done in by people who simply hated him and wanted to shake him down.

The real hypocrisy of SeeBS is that they bring in MILLIONS annually from HipHop/Rappers who denigrate women using filthy language while they do it. But SeeBS has to this date never had a problem with them or their recordings.

How ‘bout those Lady Vols! :-]

From NewsMax:

Weighing in on the Don Imus controversy, Catholic League President Bill Donohue commented Wednesday on the way Catholic bashers are treated compared to the morning radio talk-show host.

“Two years ago, Penn Jillette [of the comedy team Penn and Teller] went on ‘Showtime’ calling Mother Teresa ‘Mother F***ing Teresa’ and called the nuns who worked with her ‘f***ing c**ts.’ ‘Showtime’ is owned by Viacom and that is why I wrote to its chief, Sumner Redstone, to register a complaint. He wrote back extolling the merits of ‘artistic freedom’ and ‘tolerance,’” Donohue stated.

“Last year, on Viacom-owned CBS radio, Jillette said Mother Teresa ‘had this weird kink that I think was sexual,’ compared the saintly nun to Charles Manson and said she ‘got her [sexual] kicks watching people suffer and die.’ Again, nothing was done about this.

Donohue then quoted an episode of comedian Bill Maher. “In 2005, Bill Maher went on HBO at the time of the death of Pope John Paul II and said, ‘For those who could not make the funeral, the Vatican has asked that in lieu of flowers, just stop touching your d**k.’ He also said that the whole story of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the Resurrection was ‘grafted from paganism’; he ended by mocking the death of the Pope and the upcoming conclave. The letter I received from HBO said that ‘it’s a free country, and people are free to say silly things—even on HBO.’

Right before Easter,” Donohue continued, “the Catholic League protested the chocolate Jesus with his genitals exposed that was to be shown in the art gallery of the Roger Smith Hotel in midtown Manhattan [located on street level, the public was invited to eat him]. Air America radio co-host Cenk Uygur, writing on ‘The Huffington Post,’ said, ‘So is the argument that Jesus didn’t have a d**k? Or were people offended because it was too big? Too small? Too immaculate? Not immaculate enough?’ Regarding Imus’s remark, Uygur called it ‘derogatory and insulting.’

“Similarly, Joan Walsh on Salon.com said the chocolate Jesus was not ‘a big deal,’ and advised people not to go see it if they didn’t like it. She has now called on Imus to be fired. Even New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg said ‘don’t pay any attention’ to the chocolate Jesus, but he now finds it necessary to brand Imus’ comments ‘repugnant.’

Imus can start his own network if he wants. This is the free market; CBS and MSNBC are private companies and they can fire who they want. I don’t have to watch them if I don’t want; that’s how it works.

Yep...
I read the piece earlier today.
Thank God for Bill Donohue!

This was political power play - pure and simple. Jackson and Sharpton have just put Obama, Hillary and anyone else running for president on notice that the reverends are still major movers and shakers in the Democrat Party and better be taken very seriously — or else.

That makes perfect sense. He may have walked into a trap that was set sometime back, just waiting for him to eventually stumble into it.

I doubt that that's correct.Imus has been making very good money for his employers for a long time.

I agree. Boycott all these corporations that have record companies, etc. Contact all of them and tell them your reaction to this. Don’t we have free speech? He did go over the line, but what about all the crap we see on network TV every night? Sorry, I don’t watch network TV. I hate to say this, but Rosie may be right in saying the “thought police” are coming.

The shake-down blackmail (oops) I mean extortion express is up and running again. Look for Jackson and Sharpton to squeeze millions out of American corporations in the coming months. The professional “offended class” have struck gold with this one.

They have a great coach ... but those ladies work their butts off to make it work! We used to have a bunch of guys who watched them play on TV regularly because they were more fun to watch than the NBA.

You won’t hear any liberals saying ‘Imus’ and ‘free speech’ in the same sentence. Free speech is only for rappers and ‘artists’ who desecrate religious symbols (other the Islamic symbols). To see things as a liberal requires alot of mental gymnastics and damn little honesty.

Imus should now spend every waking hour exposing the race baiters like Sharpton and Jackson. I would hire teams of people to dig up old footage and have another following them filling every word they utter. I would be my lifes mission at this point to take them down hard.

I am not saying that Imus is right. I am saying that the word nazis must be stopped.

Whaddya talkin' about? I watch BET regularly. The biggest hit there today goes:

Yo,yo,yo!

There's a fine young lady there

A lady with whom I'd like to talk

Take out to dinner and then for a walk....

I wonder if his younger wife will stick with him.

I thought about her also. She has been throwing her weight around on the 'greening' of America, but only by virtue of the power that came from him. I know that she is considered a real pain in the neck in some of the hospitals she chairs, but he is so powerful they don't dare ignore her.

She will hate losing that premiere status in my opinion

How 'bout that foul mouthed little brat of theirs? My bet is that there are some who won't mind seeing all that pegged down a bit.

The homophobic bigot Sharpton once said, “We was building pyramids, when them Greek homos, Aristotle and Socrates was livin’ in the caves.” Where are the Lieberals who believe in zero tolerance for such bigotry? When will someone in the media have the guts to stand up to this thug?

How ironic that these basketball players who tatted themselves up to look like intimidating tough broads crumple after being called nappy headed hos.
