Nifong Issues Apology to Ex-Lacrosse Players

Durham — The local prosecutor who charged three Duke lacrosse players with raping a stripper apologized Thursday, acknowledging the decision of state prosecutors to dismiss all charges against them was correct.
"To the extent that I made judgments that ultimately proved to be incorrect, I apologize to the three students that were wrongly accused," Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong said in a statement.

Cousin of Duke Accuser Speaks Out

Jackie, the cousin of the accuser in the Duke lacrosse case, said her cousin is “devastated.”
In an exclusive interview with INSIDE EDITION, the cousin of the accuser of the three Duke lacrosse players spoke out after all the charges in the case have been dropped.
Jackie, who asked us to only use her first name, is the cousin of Crystal Gail Mangum, the exotic dancer who told police she was raped by Collin Finnerty, Reade Seligmann and David Evans at a team party last March.
The North Carolina Attorney General announced Wednesday that the players are innocent, and that Mangum told inconsistent stories about the incident. The Attorney General also said that Mangum “may actually believe the many different stories she has been telling.”
According to Jackie, Mangum is “devastated” that her name is now public, and said now she can’t go anywhere without being talked about. “The boys say their families have been affected by this, but so has my family,” Jackie said. “So has [Mangum’s] children.”
Asked if she feels sorry for the parents of the lacrosse players, Jackie said, “My heart goes out to anyone who has gone through this.”
But Jackie says Mangum isn’t unstable. “Someone with mental problems couldn’t have gotten through the kind of scrutiny she went through,” she said.
News organizations originally withheld Mangum’s photo and identity because she was making sexual assault charges. But Fox News changed course just minutes after those charges were dropped, and other news organizations soon followed.
Jackie says Mangum is has been unfairly treated by the media. She said Mangum has been going to school and just gave birth to her third child this past January.
How many people without money did Nifong condone screwing for prosecutorial belt notches?
Nifong’s comfort in treating lives as disposable is endeminc in a large number of proscutors. Remember Kerry used to be a prosecutor and just at how he treats people.

I do not think so. Many people have tried and some have even gotten a judges order to do it, but I have never been able to find anyone that was successful in doing so. Once in you are in.
The labs used by Nifong, and the officers who gave sworn testimony in indictments, should all get a careful review. I expect casualties.

All records of the arrest may not be destroyed, even though all the LE agencies are ordered to do so. True, some record of the arrest, etc. may exist after expungement. But the point is, you are granted the right to answer "No" to the question: Have you ever been arrested?
The expungement statutes so provide. The record of the arrest no longer "legally exist".

Yes you can get your record expunged. I have done it for clients who were found not guilty. There is a process and there is a record of the expunging but is CAN MOST DEFINITLY be done. Especially in cases where the charges are dropped.

Not so sure of this. The next prosecutor is going to have a very difficult time taking a REAL rape case, particularly one perpetrated against a black person, seriously. That’s going to to be damage money won’t fix.
It might reduce his sentence.
I don’t think he will get a sentence per se, just disbarred.
It is clear that what he did was not only unethical (which will get him disbarred) but criminal. He will be prosecuted by the Attorney General. You can count on that. He will be convicted and he will do time.
The Attorney General stated flatly that these guys were factually innocent. Nifong witheld evidence that clearly exonerated these guys in an attempt to win the black vote and to win the election as district attorney.
This cannot go unpunished. This kind of behavior undermines the entire criminal justice system. They have to make an example of this guy. He will do hard time.
