Very true. I taught a great books course that included several books of the Bible. The class was partly Catholic, partly Protestant, partly Jewish (both religious and secular), partly atheist, partly students who had never even opened a Bible in their lives, and partly Muslim.

I had no problems explaining what various passages meant from Jewish and Christian perspectives, or occasional Protestant and Catholic. But I would NEVER talk about Islam, for example when talking about Abraham and his children. Everyone else was willing to be reasonably open minded about differences of opinion. I wasn't claiming to say what a passage meant, but rather what it traditionally meant to different groups of people. I would never venture to mention Islam, however, beyond maybe saying that Ishmael as a wanderer has traditionally been connected with the Bedouin.
