It is a cultural thing. Judaism as a culture tends to promote charity and education.

The former IMO can explain away the tendency to vote left, especially from those not living in Israel and under constant threat. Looking down the barrel of the Islamic cannon all the time tends the have an effect to skew you to the right I would imagine.
