Coolest new car colors

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- As I drove north on the New Jersey Turnpike recently, a Mary Kay cosmetics saleswoman in a Cadillac DTS passed me on the right, her big car's paint job hitting me like a punch in the eye from the Pink Panther.

As it zoomed on past the car gradually changed color. Starting at the edges, the pink faded and turned to a pearly white.

Back in New York City, during the media preview days for the New York Auto Show in early April, I spent some time talking to Chris Webb, General Motors' Exterior Color and Trend Designer. He helped design the paint used on that car.

...and that dull spray chrome with the beautiful shiney cap, but shines only on your hands, never on the car.

Of course, if you live in an area that has fog problems, silver is the exact polar opposite of the color you want, while this article says it is better.

Even bright isn’t always a safe bet on its own.

My car is a metallic red. I still had people turning in front of me as if they didn’t see me coming. Once I got daytime running lights, that happened far less often.

Those DRLs cost me $75 to install the module, but my insurance company gave me $10 a year in discount, so they’ve paid for themselves. And after 10 years, I’m still on just my second battery, and only replaced headlights this year because I thought they were getting too dim. So no extra wear-and-tear, either...

Makes me wonder why my white van was rear-ended last year by a driver who didn’t notice I was stopped to make a left turn.

Your post about naming red paint colors made me laugh.

When our family moved into our new (VERY OLD) house more than thirty years ago, we were shocked to see the dining room painted red. REALLY red. My parents vowed to change the color ASAP, but as time went on, we grew used to it, and as more time went on, we became attached to it.

So, come paintin’ time, Mom went over to Martin’s Home Decorating Center (”We Ain’t Just Paint!”) with a small paint chip she chipped off the wall. Turns out they had an exact match. The name of the paint? “Imperial Blood.”

And thus it has remained ever since.

Any one remember the fuzzy paint of the 1960’s or early 70’s? Some cars (most often Volkswagen bugs) were painted in a fuzzy paint that resembled artificial turf. When it was green it it did look like a lawn on wheels.

When GP motorcycles started using CF bodywork...it became harder and harder for track officials to get speed readings...the problem really became apparent when Cagiva debuted an all CF bodywork...all CF frame and swing arm combo, virtually cloaking the 500cc 2-stroke engine in CF.

Lasers wouldn't pick it up...so GP switched to transponders. Now all national / world level bikes use transponders.
