NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- As I drove north on the New Jersey Turnpike recently, a Mary Kay cosmetics saleswoman in a Cadillac DTS passed me on the right, her big car's paint job hitting me like a punch in the eye from the Pink Panther.
As it zoomed on past the car gradually changed color. Starting at the edges, the pink faded and turned to a pearly white.
Back in New York City, during the media preview days for the New York Auto Show in early April, I spent some time talking to Chris Webb, General Motors' Exterior Color and Trend Designer. He helped design the paint used on that car.

Ya f'got the flappin' grey/white duct tape and that dull spray chrome with the beautiful shiney cap, but shines only on your hands, never on the car.
Buy yourself a Mitsubishi Evo....then swap all the bodywork for after market CF....that’s about as close to radar / laser evading as one can get now... for a (relatively) cheap price.
The color of my 2006 Hyundai Tiburon is called “Electric Red”. I noticed within days it was the same color as fresh blood, but no car maker would call the color “Blood Red”.
What ARE they thinking?
Matches their like luster engineering, most everything they have ever made has been a copy of someone else, except for the GTO.
My car is orange and the horn plays dixie. Yup, it’s 68 Dodge Charger. Yeehaw!!
Dark colored cars are 50% as likely to be involved in accidents as light colored cars.
Some dark colors actually had a 50% higher accident rate like dark blue and dark green. It was shown that light reflecting colors and bright colors were easily seen and much safer.
A dull black finish can't be good.
One Piece At A Time
Well, I left Kentucky back in '49

So the very next day when I punched in
With my big lunchbox and with help from my friends

GM wouldn't miss just one little piece
Especially if I strung it out over several years.
The first day I got me a fuel pump
And the next day I got me an engine and a trunk
Then I got me a transmission and all of the chrome
The little things I could get in my big lunchbox
Like nuts, an' bolts, and all four shocks
But the big stuff we snuck out in my buddy's mobile home.
Now, up to now my plan went all right
'Til we tried to put it all together one night
And that's when we noticed that something was definitely wrong.
The transmission was a '53
And the motor turned out to be a '73
And when we tried to put in the bolts all the holes were gone.
So we drilled it out so that it would fit
And with a little bit of help with an A-daptor kit
We had that engine runnin' just like a song
Now the headlight' was another sight
We had two on the left and one on the right
But when we pulled out the switch all three of 'em come on.
The back end looked kinda funny too
But we put it together and when we got thru
Well, that's when we noticed that we only had one tail-fin
About that time my wife walked out
And I could see in her eyes that she had her doubts
But she opened the door and said "Honey, take me for a spin."
So we drove up town just to get the tags
And I headed her right on down main drag
I could hear everybody laughin' for blocks around
But up there at the court house they didn't laugh
'Cause to type it up it took the whole staff
And when they got through the title weighed sixty pounds.

Well, It's a '49, '50, '51, '52, '53, '54, '55, '56 '57, '58' 59' automobile It's a '60, '61, '62, '63, '64, '65, '66, '67 '68, '69, '70 automobile.
Sounds beautiful.
I think Tiburon mean shark in Spanish.
Reds, blues, greens, yellows are nice, but too few car models offer them anymore except for sports cars.

Ah, yes... that damned lime/gold hue. I saw quite a few Torinos and Granadas in that color.
Ford dredged up an earlier version of that paint (a bit less gold) from the Mustangs of '67 and '68. They offer a clearcoat version of it on the new Mustang, under the color name "Legend Lime".
It reminded me that the retro styling, while often a good thing, *can* be taken a step too far. Now, a modern rendition of Grabber Blue or Calypso Coral - I could warm up to that.

Alwasy looked dirty tho.

Turns out that choice made the rigs into Stealth Vehicles and the visibility factor was out of whack.
What an extraordinary life they had!
