$2.2 trillion illegal alien taxpayer sticker shock

2/3 of immigrants cost Americans $22,449 a year, shows new study.

WASHINGTON – Someone has finally fixed an approximate taxpayer cost of between 12 million and 15 million illegal aliens residing in the U.S.

A new study by the Heritage Foundation's Robert Rector found a household headed by an individual without a high school education, including about two-thirds of illegal aliens, costs U.S. taxpayers more than $32,000 in federal, state and local benefits. That same family contributes an average of $9,000 a year in taxes, resulting in a net tax burden of $22,449 each year.

Over the course of the household's lifetime that tax burden translates to $1.1 million If the lower figure of 12 million illegal aliens is used for estimation purposes, the total tax burden translates to $2.2 trillion.

"Would any of us buy shares in a company that we knew would produce a loss of a million dollars a share," asks Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, in response to the study. "Cheap labor is not cheap at the cost of over a million dollars per head of household."

Rector's study, "The Fiscal Cost of Low-Skill Households to the U.S. Taxpayer," examines the economics of the 17.7 million American households made up of people without a high-school degree. Using numbers from the Census Bureau, the Congressional Research Service, the Bureau of Labor Standards and other government agencies, Rector determined what they earn, what they spend and what they receive in government services.

About half of the 17.7 million households studied are illegal aliens. About two-thirds of illegal alien households are headed by someone without a high school degree. Only 10 percent of native-born Americans fit into that category.

"Over the next ten years the total cost of low-skill households to the taxpayer (immediate benefits minus taxes paid) is likely to be at least $3.9 trillion," Rector writes. "This number would go up significantly if changes in immigration policy lead to substantial increases in the number of low-skill immigrants entering the country and receiving services."

About two-thirds of illegal alien households are headed by someone without a high school degree. Only 10 percent of native-born Americans fit into that category.

Let me say something about that ten percent.

That would include people like my maternal grandfather (when he was alive) who only graduated from 8th grade, but went on to work as a brakeman on the Pennsylvania railroad for 40 years.

Or some of the men married to my mother's sisters, one of whom had a 4th grade education, but took civil service exams and eventually became a Postmaster.

These uncles still head households, old as they are (in their 80s).

But they, like most in their generation, are not illiterate, but are self-educated men.

Not comparable to the many immigrating from south of our borders, who cannot read or write in any language.

Ike did it, so can Bush!

Yes he did, after WWII.

I met a man who was born in the US to Mexican bracero parents who had been forced to return to Mexico after WWII.

As he was an American born child, he returned as an adult American citizen, became a pastor, and raised his family here.

Interestingly, during the PROP 187 referendum, he was a supporter, as he stated that his own sons could not find work, while illegals from Mexico had no problem at all, due to their network connected to employers.

How does an illegal contribute taxes? I can see sales taxes, but not $9000 a year.

When they protest in the streets, they continually claim they pay taxes - I’ve never figured out how you can pay taxes without a legal social security number, or why you would even try.

???

Geesh! They provide their employer with a fake SS number....the withheld payroll taxes are sent in quarterly by the employer to the US treasury...no refunds given on tax returns...it's FOUND MONEY to the federal and state coffers.

It's one of the main reasons the governments are slow to correct it. It's helping keep social security solvent.

At least that's what I'm told.

Just a small business owner, that identifies with the Conservative ideology of small government and tax cuts; capitalism.

I'm hopelessly liberal on immigration. They took the nerve to get across the border to work here....let them stay. Give them citizenship. Get them on the tax rolls.

Hmmm... Says all I need to know about you.

Someone hasn't seen the latest estimate of 30 million illegals.

Plenty of truth to that statement,
President Bush seems to be selling us down the river to the high bidder.

Whoa!! The extra money we have to pay in taxes, etc. is FAR higher than any supposed increased price that we would have to pay for LETTUCE, etc.

They don't all have fake social security numbers though - many work for cash so they aren't having anything withheld.

Maybe you can explain to me how they came up with a figure of $9000 even if they were basing it on social security - no freaking way any illegal is making that kind of money. More likely they are in a $25,000 range which would only mean withholding of about $2000 a year

FICA taxes are only one federal tax. The withholding taxes on wages earned is more than your F.I.C.A. taxes paid.

This is 'free' money to the federal government.
