I won't be Clinton's No 2, says Obama

An increasingly confident Senator Barack Obama has rejected the possibility of becoming Hillary Clinton's running mate in the 2008 election - but dangled the notion that she might be his vice-presidential candidate.

During a television appearance on the popular Late Show With David Letterman, Mr Obama poured cold water on the "dream ticket" of Clinton-Obama that some Democratic strategists are pushing. "No, you don't run for second," he said. "I don't believe in that." When Mr Letterman said it would be a "powerful ticket", Mr Obama shot back: "Which order are we talking about?"

The Illinois senator stunned the political world last week when he announced that he had raised $25 million (£12.64 million) in campaign funds during the first quarter of the year. The amount propelled him to a new level, transforming him from being a possibly temporary political phenomenon riding a wave of media celebrity into a viable prospect for the White House, despite his youth and relative inexperience.

Mr Obama was at ease on the show, an important election forum, as he traded quips and one-liners with Mr Letterman. He said his two young daughters were "not overly impressed" by his running for president and that his wife was frustrated he was not home in Chicago more often. "My wife is starting to refer to me as her first husband," he said. "It's a little disturbing."

Honest question. In the past, what candidate for President has actually responded, "sure, if I lose I would love to be X's VP choice."

Has any candidate ever said it?

Yep, he should study how well that kind of thing worked out for JFK.

Take Obamamania seriously. He has been doing a much better job raising funds than Clinton has.

I would be surprised to see Hilary take the VP position in a NY minute... Obama is so gonna have an "accident"

"No, you don't run for second," he said. "I don't believe in that."

How about 535th first? He's a junior newby Senator and suddenly he thinks he is entitled to be President of the U.S? The media would not even be taking him seriously if he were not black. This is preferential treatment based on one's race and is an insult to all Americans.

To a certain extent the same goes for Hillary Clinton - if she were not a women she would not be getting this attention because it is certainly not based on her credentials or anything she has done.

This is good news. I’d like to see Fred Thompson choose Michael Steele or J.C. Watts as a running mate.

I may be mistaken, but I think Jon Edwards said words to those effect in the Spring of 2004.

Sounds like Obama is having as Obasm.

Does he really think he's going to survive in this game? The Clintons have a machine that will sink him before the primaries. Obama has two years of senatorial tenure. What's he been smoking?
