Outrage shouldn't be directed at Imus alone
Washington Times ^ | 4-10-07 | Adrienne Washington

Where is C. Delores Tucker, the feisty civil rights leader, when you need her? No doubt, the late president of the National Congress of Black Women, might be loudest among the critics calling for the ouster of radio talk-show host Don Imus for the racist and sexist comments he made about the Rutgers University women's basketball team.

But Mrs. 0Tucker's tirade would not stop, as it shouldn't, with the race-baiting-for-ratings ploy of an aging, white radio shock jock. After all, Mr. Imus is not the first person to call black women disparaging and disrespectful names. Just tune in to any urban radio station.

I don’t get why these young women put up with being portrayed the way they are in popular music videos. I’m an old white guy and I’m offended.

Course I have two daughters...

Calling yourself a "dawg," a "NWA" or worse, gives others license to follow your slurs.

Yes she does get it! When you hear two white boys in high school saying, "What's up, my Ni****?" to each other, then you know they did not pick it up from home. Until more "leaders" continue to criticize the "gangstas" who make make billions off of this, nothing will change. We as a people will continue to the Step'N'Fetchit fools of the US. Entertainment for the masses (who will be less white and increasingly brown and olive).

What really gets me is two things.

First, the libs posting all over that Imus is a right-wing fanatic. Imus may be a lot of things but right-wing is certainly not one of them. The guy is center-left, at best.

Second, the libs posting all over that folks like Limbaugh and Beck spew racial hatred all the time. Do they even listen to the shows? In all my 15+ years of listening to Limbaugh and my 5+ years listening to Beck, I have never heard either one of them make a racially offensive comment.

Well because the left likes to make it like any person who made racial comments automatically is right-wing. But they never seem to talk about that Mr. Byrd and his old KKK connections.

There was show on MTV about the “Video Hoes”. I would say that girls who agree to appear on these videos fall right into your worst stereotypes: in poverty, Very VERY mis-educated, barely literate, kid or two out of wedlock, possibly abused as child (the root of most problems, IMHO), usually feels like her body is the only thing she can offer the world. Most are hoping to get “discovered”, and never seem to understand that nobody cares about the chicks in the background. Nobody.

To the Left, if you say anything that hurts someone’s feelings, even if it is the truth for their own good, then the remark is racist or homophobic or whatever other negative label they want to give it.

Do you or any body else remember C Delores, I was talking about her in another thread today and forgot her name.

The following is a comment I posted in another thread responding to someone else dealing with Imus addressing this same situation:

Well did you ever hear about the college girls at Spelman who protested the rapper Nelly? I guess you haven’t, but I know it made was in all the black magazines when it hit. Or about that other black woman who recently died and spent a long time fighting against rap music, although she recieved many death threats for doing so.

Everyone knows that the media gives more attention to some stories than others. I was waiting to see if the major newstations would pick the Spelman story up. Guess what it never happened. The only reason I found out about it is because relatives from Atlanta told me about it. My mom used to have subscriptions to Essence, Ebony, and Jet. These magazines always brought this issue up and voiced disgust with it.

Just like no one could stop the Dixie Chicks from doing and saying what they wanted to say, the same goes for rap music. The ones who are disgusted with rap music employ the same techniques that folks who are disgusted with the DC employ mainly just by not buying their music.

At the same time, all rap music is not the same. You have some rappers that just rap about social issues or issues that are involving blacks and not bashing women. I remember this one rapper put out a song called “Be a Father to your Child”. Some rappers have put out songs that are uplifting and respectful to women. Will Smith is known for putting out rap albums that don’t involve cursing. But you can guess what music gets most play on the radio stations.

I know a lot of people who can’t stand BET (myself included) and just don’t watch it and have voiced many complaints to them about it. It has fell on deaf ears. I have watched this other station called TVOne a few times that seems to be like the anti-BET.

Another thing you need to realize that this whole rap business is a lot of money for the people involved. The biggest winners are not the fly by night and run of the mill rappers, but these record companies and producers. A lot of them no matter how many complaints are willing to give up on something that is giving them so much money. So some black folks just do the talking with their wallet. As a matter fact, I read that the biggest buyer of rap albums is white youths.

Another thing my beef with Imus comments have nothing to do with race, but everything to do with a bunch of young college kids who are just trying to get an education.

The National Congress of Black Women?

The National Association of Black Journalists?

Now I ask, who are the racists here? Who are the ones pointing out their differences from other humans? Has anyone ever heard of the National Association of White Women or The National Association of White Journalists? What a howl we would hear if anyone ever did. What a disgusting double standard and nobody cries foul over this!!

It is simply a power trip and control issue by the black community. They're saying "here is a list of words that we can use every day to refer to ourselves, and it doesn't matter to us at all.

"But if you use one of these words, even in gest, even in trying to 'play along' with how we use these words, you will be hammered back to the stone age."

It is pathetic to watch MSNBC. They appear like such whiners and losers, always complaining about Fox.

Dan Abrams really sounded like a sore loser yesterday in his pathetic attempt to turn the Imus controversy into a slap at Fox. There is no double standard, no liberal bias in the media, he insisted while trying to argue that Republicans are not judged more harshly than Democrats. This contradicts a report on O'Reilly by a researcher who documented that there is a media bias.

Did you ever hear about Bill Maher’s one time girlfriend the Video Vixen is just like what you talk about. My pastor does a 3 day program about the dangers of hip hop every August. The reason why you don’t have Al and Jesse out there screaming about is purely financial reasons. I am pretty sure they have their hand in the pot somewhere. Besides why would Jesse discuss issues that he is guilty of doing.

As a young black woman I don’t listen to rap nor do I like it. I usually listen to oldies and gospel. It seems like the ones that are doing the biggest fight on the whole issue are the pastors.
Here is the Wikipedia entry about C Delorus, read her stance on hip hop:

He who lives by the insult will eventually die by the insult.

Imus has brought the level of discourse in this nation down to the gutter and by wallowing in the gutter it was inevitable that he would be brought down by his own gutter language.

I think Imus should have been fired a decade ago just for being an insufferable jerk. But he kept pushing the envelope and eventually when you push it too far it is going to break.

It did. I hope he gets fired. He has worked hard at it and he has earned it. It's pay day, Imus. Your ship has come in.

You forgot the Black congressional caucus (sp?)
What if we had a white congressional caucus?

Here’s what I think, Who cares what imus said? When did it become against the law to offend? Anyone should have the right to say anything, save threatening the presidents life. Basically if you are a person other than Caucasian you can say anything bad about anyone, however if you are Caucasian you may not say anything negative about anyone. Woo, what a country we live in. Next, we’ll get hate crime legislation where if a cop heres a white guy call a black girl a “nappy headed ho” on a radio show, he’ll send him to the slammer. Just another indication that this country dosen’t have much time left before it suffers the fate of ancient Rome. my .02

He’s a “shock jock”. People who listen to him expect this. I have never listened to him, once. I’m against censure. If people are offended by something someone says to them or about them, GET OVER IT! Move on.

Our Lord Jesus Christ sure took a lot of verbal abuse, insults and lies and he gave us an example of how to take it, forgive, leave it in the Father’s hands and move on.

I taught my children that people are going to hurt your feelings a LOT. Its life.
