US 'in covert war against Hizbullah'

Washington is waging a covert war against Hizbullah, according to the militant group, which accuses the US administration of arming anti-Hizbullah militias and seeking to undermine the Lebanese army in moves that could plunge the country back into civil war. "[The US vice president] Dick Cheney has given orders for a covert war against Hizbullah... there is now an American programme that is using Lebanon to further its goals in the region," Sheikh Naim Qasim, Hizbullah's deputy secretary general, told the Guardian in an interview in a safe house deep in Beirut's southern suburbs.

The accusation follows reports in the US and British media that the CIA has been authorised to take covert action against the militant Shia group, which receives substantial military backing from Iran, as part of wider strategy by the Bush administration to prevent the spread of Iranian influence in the region. According to the reports, US intelligence agencies are authorised to provide "non-lethal" funding to anti-Hizbullah groups in Lebanon and to activists who support the western-backed government of Fouad Siniora.

Poor Hizbullah. Of course they have not been having anything like a covert war, now have they. The author is clearly a Hizbullah sympathizer.

Are we having a “covert” war? I hope so. This would be nothing more than a continuation of the Reagan Doctrine.

Apparently Comrade Pelosi wasn’t aware we were at war with the Hezbo’s when she went to suck up to their paymaster. Maybe she thought they were Lezbo’s and she wanted to stop by and genuflect.

I still think that we missed a bet with the Russians at the beginning of the WoT. That is, we should have encouraged the Russians to act in a complementary manner to our own operations, specifically targeting for assassination Islamist instigators, such as Mullahs and Imams, and the leadership of organizations that directly and indirectly support terrorism.

This not only works to one of the strengths of Russia, but it is far less expensive than our approach. Americans, however, have some compunctions against taking out such provacateurs, so wouldn’t be quite as effective at it.

By now, any Islamist who shot his mouth off would never sleep again for fear of having some fatal accident or unexpected illness.

Now granted, if we were to do it, we wouldn’t be completely ineffectual. And it’s better late then never.

Dang!

That Dick Cheney sure is one busy Vice President!

You’d think that subverting the Constitution and tapping every telephone and Internet account in America would have already plum worn him out. But then he goes and starts up a secret war with Hezbollah in his spare time. Amazing!

I hope I have that much energy when I’m his age. (Sooner than I care to think about.)
