If something is free, you get what you pay for IMHO.

I’ll stick with Unix/Linux, thanks. No need to mess ‘round with some Fisher-Price alternative.

...fertile ground that nobody else has hoed yet...

Uh oh!

(sorry - couldn't resist 8^)

Same here. I much prefer a real OS that I can actually use.

This statement can lead me to only conclude that you don't understand Linux.

"We think that's fertile ground that nobody else has hoed yet,"

Microsoft, open your eyes! Apple has had XGrid with its cluster servers for a while, and they already use the regular client systems. This is simply another case of Microsoft trying to spread to a new market it sucks at using its leverage. It will take years before they actually have a truly competitive product that would sell on its merits, but in the meantime their muscle will get it pushed out.

From a recent interview with the creator of DirectX we find that Microsoft's attitude isn't "How can we make something that people want?" but "How can we force people to adopt this?"

Why is it assumed to be a lie?

It just may surprise you that people actually may like a product that Microsoft offers. I guess if you get all your views from the interweb you would never realize it.

"[SGI] got a frosty reception on a compute cluster mailing list when it announced support for Windows CCS earlier this year"

More proof that Linux-worship is a religion with these people. The only other group I have seen so fervent in their beliefs(right or wrong) is liberal democraps.

A’yup. And one that won’t feel compelled to reboot itself (or worse) at random intervals.

Let me just throw this out there: some of you may have the false conception that Linux is somehow done all gratis. The majority of code written is written by employees on company time at places like IBM and HP. Trust me, they expect (and get) a return on their investment.

Pretty cool, you get a cluster of blue screens!
Actually Server 2003 rocks, it’s easy to cluster and its rocks solid.
I’m not seeing someone that has a working parallel cluster redoing it.

I guess you missed this part:
Among technical advantages of Linux clusters is better maturity, better software choices, broader abilities and a proven ability to run at large scale, Claunch said.

Yep. If they weren't, then they wouldn't be doing it.

no, I didnt miss any part- I even included the quote I was referring to.

Why would people give a ‘frosty reception’ to SGI just for having the nerve to make another product that -OMG!- supports MICROSOFT!!!

Look, I am a computer software engineer - I KNOW linux is vastly superior to anything windows makes. I just don’t like the religious zeal some Linux supporters have, and I think it turns off a lot of users from Linux. (They cause people to think it is too technical)

Well let me amend my statement; I believe that there are certainly some Linux zealots out there. I don’t think that lack of caring about SGI’s support is indicative of that.

Besides, I figure that most of the time they turn off users because of the lack of personal hygeine and Star Trek paraphenalia...the zealots are always the ones that define super-nerd!

There's a social side
to everything. Linux nuts
damage Linux by

making Linux seem
the choice of idiots so
smart folks avoid it.
