Poll: Give immigrants a chance; CALIFORNIA FAVORS BUSH PLAN: MIX OF AMNESTY, ENFORCEMENT
Mercury News ^ | April 10, 2007 | Brandon Bailey

With the White House and Congress talking once again about immigration reform, a new Field Poll shows a large majority of Californians support giving illegal immigrants an opportunity to stay in this country and gain legal status.

President Bush visited Arizona on Monday to launch a new campaign for a multi-pronged overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, a modified version of his proposal that stalled in Congress last year. And the poll released today shows Californians favor the general outlines of the president's proposal - a path to legal status for residents who are now here illegally, a temporary worker program, penalties for employers who hire illegal workers and stricter border enforcement.

Heavy on amnesty and light on enforcement, I suspect.

Even though Bush insists that its not an ‘amnesty’, the MSM forgets to not use the ‘A’ word when discussing it. If he would just admit it was an amnesty, he would be more credible in his own party. If it wasn’t an amnesty, then do you think the FBI would allow me to break into the FBI building and pay a $3000 fine to not go to jail?

Enforcement First!

Only then can we talk about amnesty.

Between the “immigration” (i.e., illegal entry into our country) issues and the political correctness virus that follows us even to the battlefield, we’re losing our country.

Enforcement First!
Mom said the Mexicans were picking cotton on their farm in the 1930s - doubt things will change much.

Enforcement First! Mom said the Mexicans were picking cotton on their farm in the 1930s - doubt things will change much.

If that was unchanged it would be fine. Here in LA. today's illegals often work as plumbers and electricians and do HVAC work and computer networking. They work for the city and the LAUSD in large numbers. They aren't coming to seeek their fortune. Thay are coming to seek yours.

Regards.

"Enforcement First!"

I agree that enforcement must be primary.

To ensure that we can have true enforcement and effective hiring management, we'll need to clearly identify those here illegally. To do that, you must by default identify those here legally.

In any case, we need something better that the worthless crazy quilt of state drivers license management...

The only thing I see that will give us the control we want is an effective national ID system.

I don't have a problem with that, but I'd think that a lot of those most concerned with immigration might be.

I'd be interested in understanding others thoughts on the subject.

If that was unchanged it would be fine. - that is a problem, everything changes, everyone likes things to evolve until they arrive on the scene, then they want evolution to stop.

90% of the people polled are illegal, what else would they say?

Fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice, 3X, shame on me...

Bush made a bold step in the right direction, but still has to add more aggressive teeth before American patriots will support his illegal-immigration reform.

He's just got to get serious about stemming/stopping the tidal-wave of illegals coming in. A sinking ship with a wide gash to its hull can only stay afloat by closing its wound OR pumping out more water than its taking in...
To that end, Bush should add serious teeth to his reform package that says that upon Reform initiation - for every 1 new incoming illegal coming into the US, 1 (even 2) newly "conditional amnestied" prior-illegals will be deported (LIFO basis).

Perhaps that's a bit extreme, but America's patriots cannot allow themselves to be fooled again by sham amnesty immigration legislation that doesn't SERIOUSLY CLOSE AND ENFORCE THE BORDER and technologically monitor the fence.

One in every eight California residents is Mexican-born, one in every four is foreign born, and one in every three is Hispanic. Maybe that explains the poll results.

"a new Field Poll shows a large majority of Californians support giving illegal immigrants an opportunity to stay in this country and gain legal status."

California is addicted to illegal immigrants. They use them for cheap labor in landscaping, painting, maintenance, nannies, farms, whatever. It isn't the illegals they particulary want to support as much as it is their wallets and bank accounts.

The president doesn’t see anything wrong with rewarding 15 million illegals who broke the law to come here? His plan will allow them to bring their entire extended family from Mexico to join them in America. That’s 100 million immigrants who will be eligible for social security even though they paid nothing into it. The supporters of this plan should be put on trial for treason.

The Field Poll routinely returns results that the California Democratic Party desires (it's probably part of the contract), and is utterly meaningless.

It's usually the illegals themselves who are polled ('Nine out of ten illegal aliens agree that you damn gringos should just roll over and let us take over!').

And as for the Mercury News, a dying newspaper, they routinely run Mexico Uber Alles pieces day after day, with the latest idiocy being all about the Mexican Consulate complaining about 'police brutality' against 'Latinos" (er, Mexican illegal aliens).

There is no support for amnesty among Americans.

I believe it does. My sister lives in Watsonville, near Monterey. I visited her last Christmas, and went to the grocery store one day. I noticed that I appeared to be the only non-Hispanic in the store, and I heard more Spanish spoken than English. In my sister's neighborhood, many of the homes appear to have 8 or more adults living in them. My sister says they're nice enough, but they won't speak to her or even meet her eyes most times, presumably because they're illegals and are afraid of being reported. She also told me that Watsonville's city council has reported that 75% of the town is hispanic, and that at least half of them are presumed to be illegal.

My sister's husband is hispanic, and he's strongly against the illegals. He makes a point of saying that his own parents immigrated LEGALLY 50+ years ago. Though he speaks fluent Spanish, he worked hard as a teenager to eliminate his accent, so he could sound like an American. He's a deputy sheriff, and says the percentage of illegals in the county jail rises every month.

My sister and her husband are leaving California as soon as he's eligible to retire.

The politicians who do nothing to stop this mass migration, ignoring the protests of their fellow citizens whose interests they are supposed to represent (including, I believe, many of the legal immigrants), are creating a massive economic problem for the future.

The Democrats want these millions of undereducated, easily manipulable, largely unskilled or low-skilled people who will be a crippling drain on government "benefits" programs. They'll be a perfect tool for the Democrats to use to demand higher taxes and larger government entitlements. As the millions of illegals eventually swamp the labor market, many of them (and many legal citizens) will end up unemployed, or working at below-subsistance wages. This will help the Democrats forward their long-term goal of making as many people dependent on the government as possible, hence creating a socialist economy. It will also give the Democrats a huge base of dissatisfied and resentful constituents who believe they're being discriminated against, and who can be emotionally manipulated into voting the for party that promises them government "help", thus ensuring Democrats are elected in perpetuity.

Too many Republican politicians appear catering to their constituents who want cheap labor, and appear to believe--mistakenly, in my opinion--that a sizeable number of these illegals will end up voting Republican.

Our representatives are betraying us in order to benefit themselves, and we, of course, will be the ones to pay the price. And it will be worse for our children and grandchildren.
