Bill Donohue Thought South Park Parody Was “Hilarious”

Wednesday's South Park, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone parodied the Catholic League's Bill Donohue as a power-hungry Catholic Church official who overthrows Pope Benedict and jails Jesus for going against the Church. On last night's Scarborough Country, Donohue reacted to the show in a very surprising way given his track record of over-exaggerated outrage and violent rhetoric.

"Maybe I do come across too tough on TV. I thought it was hilarious and our staff thought it was hilarious. I said, listen, I said I have no defense except I'm gonna go with it."

Donohue's official statement can be found here. His "I have no defense" reaction speaks to the sheer genius of South Park. Anyone who watched the show knows they hit him hard for sometimes acting un-Christian, but the moral of the episode was one with which he couldn't have possibly disagreed. In case you missed it, check the ComedyCentral schedule here. It'll be rerun tonight through Monday

BTW, you are apparently not a South Park fan. Just an educated guess.

You should check out the episode entitled the “Passion of the Jew”. It was hysterical. They nailed Mel Gibson as an insane anti-semite 2 years before the cops did.

It was a classic. You should watch that before you even watch the “Butt Out” episode. (and we know who you are in the episode, you were great)

Point is, the creators, Matt Parker and Trey Stone, hate the haters of everyone. They are Libertarians. They rip on Christians (see “Bloody Mary”) and anyone with or without a pulse.

Apparently an homage to Krull. I haven’t ever seen that so I just used the best way to describe it.

who said it was part of basic catholic doctrine that priests have sex with young boys.

Now, where in the world would anybody get an idea like that?

As a Jew, I've never understood how some Christians could seriously get upset at Jews in general and present-day Jews in particular over Jesus' killing by individuals who lived two thousand years ago.

No real Christian can do that. My sin killed Christ.

Of course, the Vatican has a long, sick history of anti-Semitism.

Yes, but I don’t think the moral of the epside was one that he would agree with.

Hmmm. No, given the context and such, I don’t think he has a Jew problem.

The Vatican? The treatment of Jews by the Church of Rome has been spotty, but overall more tolerant of them than most places in Christendom. The American Irish have never been kind to Jews—or Italians—or Germans—or Poles. By and large, the Church has treated the Jews less roughly than the English treated the Irish.

my favorite image of my Savior is known as “Laughing Jesus.”

It shows the most common representation, somewhat derivative of the features on the image on The Shroud, in a pose of throwing His head back in joyous laughter. I dearly love that image.

The humor, for me, in anything like you describe in the South Park episode is imagining how the two creative talents who came up with that little joke will react on meeting our Lord when they finally do “pass over.”

“Listen, man, it was just a joke. Really. Really, really.”

Of course, you realize that our Lord has an obvious come back: “Respect My authority.”

It’s like how I imagine George Burns was greeted at the pearly gates. “Oh, The Boss wants to talk to you personally!”

God has a sense of humor second to none. Look at us!
