I would think that a Southwest facing cave would be ideal.
In the winter you would get more sun during the afternoon so that the cave would be warmer longer during the night as the rock gave off the sun's heat it had collected.
During the summer it would provide more shade to keep it cooler.

Other than the obvious (Location), I’d bet the cavemen selected their diggs based on:
1. NO BEARS in there.
2. Ease of going clubbing (women on the head)
3. The once clubbed little woman said the cave was OK.
4. The level area in front was appropriate for BBQing.
5. The neighbors weren’t inside of “his” cave.
