New York turns up the heat on Crips, Bloods
3-day sweep nets 167 alleged gang members August 27, 1997 Web posted at: 11:43 p.m. EDT (0343 GMT) From Correspondent Peg Tyre
NEW YORK (CNN) -- The Crips and the Bloods, gangs synonymous with bloody violence on the West Coast, have been steadily migrating eastward, but they have run into a rude welcome in New York.
In a recent three-day sweep, New York City police arrested 167 alleged members of the gangs. Most of them are reported to be Bloods, but at least one unit of Crips was collared. The alleged gang members have been charged with crimes ranging from assault and drug sales to attempted murder. "Operation Red Bandana was designed to break this pattern of violent crime, stop their efforts to expand and organize in the city," said Police Commissioner Howard Safir.
135 slashings attributed to gang rituals
City police first noticed a sharp increase in what seemed like random slashings. Two young men would approach a stranger on the street or subway, pull out a box-cutter and slash their victim's face. Police now attribute 135 of these slashings to gang initiation rituals.
"We will continue to pursue these investigations and work toward the total eradication of all criminal gangs," Safir said. "We are determined to prevent New York City from becoming an outpost for this kind of criminal activity."
Police estimate that another 800 members of the Crips and Bloods are still operating in New York City, but they hope Operation Red Bandana will put a damper on their growth.

couldn’t have posted this in the related thread, eh?
Ah, so the solution is to ban the sale of boxcutters to those under 21. Just as the solution to criminals with guns was to take guns away from law-abiding permit holders.
Box-cutters don’t slash people, people slash people.
WWBGD?
(What Would Bernhard Goetz Do?)
Wonder what the number is now? Let me guess however that the box cutter ban did little if anything in preventing crime.
Could've, but then possibly, you'd have never seen it. It's better to get both sides of a story.
I thought Bloods and Crips now sat on the Board of LA’s city and cop councils and went to college to become our future judges... courtesy of Dems. NYC is obviously behind the “progressist curve” /sarc off
And it’s better to use the actual title like the forum rules require.
So, he is still a utlra liberal statist. I will surely never vote for the rino.
Conservative solution: hang the criminals.
Why not just start executing gang members, rather than collectively punish EVERYONE?? Justice is hard to fathom apparently. "Prevention works well for diseases, so why not crime too?" I know this diseased mindset - I once thought this way when I was a flaming lib.
Fixed
Armored undercover cops. Colt .45 JHP.
Do the math. Let’s see if this twisted “rite” disappears like spring snow.
Never, ever take a box-cutter to a gunfight.
NY and the country should be outraged and demand a stronger, and faster, response to attacks on the public. These guys are a disease and like any threat to public health, they should be identified and attacked with the strongest possible response.
How many street cops knew about this initiation rite after the first 10 attacks? I’ll bet plenty.
Nobody has ever handled this situation better than Mick Dundee.
Can’t we all just get along??? - Mayor Bloomberg
You do realize that this is a city with 8.5 million people, not to mention all of the commuters and tourists. 135 isn’t very many.
Thugs are thugs. Ban boxcutters and they find something else.
