The thing is that these issues are no longer "top", at least for the time being - the war is. And on many of the other "top issues" [fiscal, law and order] he's not to the left, but to the right, so it kind of balances.

On law & order, maybe he is to the right, but his likely opponent campaigns that way too. On fiscal issues, he is not on the right. And as far as the war on terror, he places too much importance on political correctness, to a degree that it could impact our safety. Not to mention cronyism.
