Albany (AP) - Gov. Eliot Spitzer signed a bill Monday moving New York's presidential primary to Feb. 5 - a move that could benefit the Democratic and Republican front-runners, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rudy Giuliani, both New Yorkers.
About a dozen other states, including California and New Jersey, have already moved their primaries or caucuses to Feb. 5 or are about to do so. About a dozen more are considering such moves, setting the stage for what is quickly becoming known as "Super-Duper Tuesday" just 22 days after the leadoff Iowa caucuses.
"Moving the primary date to February, we will help secure New York's large and diverse population an influential voice in selecting the 2008 presidential nominees," said Spitzer.
Democrat Spitzer's move is expected to mean a big early haul of national convention delegates for Clinton, a New York senator, and for Giuliani, a former New York City mayor. The two New Yorkers, respectively, lead national polls for the Democratic and Republican nominations.
New York had been scheduled to hold its primary on March 4 until Giuliani allies began pressing for the earlier date. The Clinton camp quickly gave its blessing to the move which won overwhelming approval from New York's Republican-led state Senate and Democratic-controlled Assembly last month.
"It's certainly good for both candidates from New York," said former state GOP Chairman William Powers, a co-chairmen of Giuliani's New York campaign.
Bill Gardner, the New Hampshire secretary of state who sets the date for the traditional first-in-the-nation primary, said the move by New York and the other states likely means the entire nominating process will be over on Feb. 5. He called that "a rush to judgment" that might not be good for politics.
"It's going to be a big national event," said Bill Carrick, a California-based Democratic consultant.
LOL! Sorry about that it should read NEW YORK STATE! LOL!
Mike Medved did a show on this about a month and a half ago, but I haven't heard anything since then.

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.
Hence, the importance of heavy fundraising early in the process.........
Haven’t heard anything about that yet but I think CA was thinking of doing something like that.
Mew York! I love it! :)
Exactly. Anyone who is thinking of Running should have raised at least $10 million by now.
LOL! Sometimes I wish they had a way to fix things after you post them. LOL!
LOL. Well, I like your version better! (^..^)/
It’s time for a national primary. The Tuesday after Memorial Day. That gives plenty of time for candidates to campaign and raise money and it gives all candidates equal footing.
No that was the sound NY made when Pataki ran the state...’MEW’, the sound a ‘pussy’ cat makes.
Now we have bullet head Spitzer, a ferocious Marxists gumming up the works....he dosen’t MEW he HEE HAWS....and is a despicable POS. all things considered we would have been better with goofy Tommy-boy Golisano.
Though I dont know if this is good or bad for my side, moving up the primaries, I always thought it might be good if the nation had 1 primary day.
Looks like it just may happen. 20 or more states so far. I suspect the others won’t be far behind.
Texas needs to move its primary to August.
I’m tired of being irrelevant.
What I’d like to know is what happens if the winner of the de facto national primary day flames out before being nominated?
I wonder if 'electronic recounts' will be needed because of dimpled screens, greasy screens, blurred screens, instructions not in the 50 most popular global languages, or 'pregnant index fingers' that meant to actually vote for the other candidate?
Texas - Current Texas law places their primary on the first Tuesday in March (3/4 in 2008). Two bills introduced into the state legislature would change it to the first Tuesday in February (2/5 in 2008): House Bills 993 and 996. Both bills are currently pending in committee.

Whoever is responsible for this idiocy should be taken out and bludgeoned to death. Thanks to this de-facto extension of the election cycle, voter apathy will increase by a significant factor.
