GOP seizes climate issue (Logging, nuke plants can fight warming, lawmakers say)
Sac Bee ^ | 4/8/07 | E.J. Schultz

How popular is global warming as a political issue? So popular that even conservative state lawmakers are getting into the act, using the issue to sell everything from building dams and nuclear power plants to thinning forests.

The arguments are simple enough: Higher temperatures reduce mountain snowpack, so more dams are needed to capture winter precipitation that falls as rain.

Nuclear power plants produce few greenhouse gases, the leading cause of manmade warming.

Forest fires, on the other hand, send plenty of gases into the air -- so why not encourage timber companies to clear more brush to reduce fire risk?

Environmentalists, who are skeptical of the proposals, are peeved that the other side has stolen their issue.

"Clearly these legislators are just dressing up their existing legislation with a thin veneer of a pretended concern about global warming," said Bill Magavern, senior representative for Sierra Club California.

Republican lawmakers strongly opposed last year's landmark legislation -- Assembly Bill 32 -- to cut the state's greenhouse gases by 25 percent by 2020. They criticized the bill as a job-killer and a primitive attempt at placing local controls on a global problem.

Have they converted? Not necessarily, says Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, R-Irvine, author of the nuclear bill.

"It's politics," he said. "If the (Democratic) leadership has said this is a problem ... then all I'm suggesting is maybe this is one of the solutions we should look at."

That Republicans are now talking about climate change shows how far it has come, said GOP strategist Dan Schnur.

"You can always tell that an issue has evolved when both parties start using it," he said. "They're not arguing about global warming anymore in the state Legislature. They're arguing about what issue it next influences."

Sure. Why not? Come out with a strong stance on air pollution and overfishing as well. Just keep it locked up in committee and say anything that sounds good.

The Democrats have made global warming a political issue. What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander as well.

Dead and decomposing trees, which were carbon dioxide sinks while alive, release that carbon dioxide back into the air after death.

The only environmentally responsible thing to do to prevent the release of carbon dioxide (which liberals now say is a pollutant) is to cut down those trees and use them before they die.

This movement has nothing to do with the environment. It has everything to do with socialists and communists using climate change as an excuse to further their socialist/communist agenda. Republicans falling for this sham are only supporting the socialist cause. It's another reason why conservatives should form their own party.

"Clearly these legislators are just dressing up their existing legislation with a thin veneer of a pretended concern about global warming..."

And that's a great description of how Democrat politicians are using "global warming" as new paint on all their old anti-progress, anti-economic-growth, anti-civilization proposals.

In the Sierra Nevada range, it would be possible to get in earlier than usual due to a smaller snowpack this year, unfortunately regulations are very restrictive to anyone touching much of anything in federal lands.. we may be looking at even more extreme conditions for fires this year as well as a result.

Incredible how hypocritical the enviro and eco crowd and those who follow them blindly are. .. but then , we did have 8 years of Clinton not so long ago, they did a lot of damage that lingers to this day.

More like pretended global warming... Once again, only the Left is allowed to use bogus issue as a veneer. Though theirs is definitely thick.

Hey... this is all starting to make sense.

Preemptive strike on Iran means fewer street vendors with their harmful charcoal kabob cookers...

Shut down ANWR get rid of the caribou that emit all the methane from grazing.

No private jets for the Hollywood jet set.

And best of all, a muzzle for Hillary that shuts out all the hot air and CO2.

An emergency like this calls for extraordinarily actions by the President.

Truth and reality disappeared from American government quite a while ago -— THIS is a classic example. Total insanity to justify ANYTHING for ANY PURPOSE.

Younger, growing trees also soak up more CO2 than "old growth" trees. In GW terms, we should be cutting down all the old growth forests and replanting them. Also, if you want clean energy, it doesn't come any cleaner than hydroelectric. Let's start damming up everything between Portland Maine and Portland Oregon. It's for the children planet, after all.

Note to lefties: careful what you wish for--you just might get it.

" It's another reason why conservatives should form their own party."

Actually, I believe it makes more sense to take back the Republican party, already established. Far less effort and, potentially, faster rewards. Let the liberal Republicans that seem to be growing like a cancer start their own party or go ahead and join the Democrats.

A week ago, I was sitting in a hotel room in Nuernberg, watching a special on german TV about the huge number of trees that were flattened by a recent storm.

The Green reporter asked a Forester, “Will you leave these trees as habitat for the little animals?”

Forester, looking horrified, “Oh, H$LL no - one lightening strike, and the entire country would burn to the ground. We have every logging truck in Germany working 24/7, to haul this mess to the sawmills. Of course, it is a 4-year supply of lumber, but...”

I fell out of my chair laughing. It seemed such an apt reminder, that the Greens know exactly as much about forest management as the Goracle does about Climatology.
