Mitt Romney Takes More Heat As Cartoon Character

(KUTV) BOSTON - Former Massachusetts governor and Salt Lake Olympic chief Mitt Romney has gotten plenty of media attention this week – not for his political campaign, but rather for appearing in a comic strip.

Romney, who is running for president, has appeared in the satirical comic strip Doonesbury all week long. The comic features Romney speaking to a fictional radio show host about his campaign, and his reported “flip flops” on certain issues.

“Say it ain’t so, governor,” the radio host says in one of this week’s comic strips. “Changed positions on abortion, gun control and gay rights. What’s next? Immigration?”

“Yes. And tax cuts and stem cell research and my own health care plan. I have taken a fresh look at all of them,” the cartoon Romney replies.

Romney has taken criticism recently regarding those issues because many believe that he has conveniently changed his positions in order to gain more political support.

One of the more notable “flip flops” is Romney’s stance on abortion. Today, Romney claims to be pro-life. However, during a debate in 1994, in which he ran against Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy, Romney clearly claimed to support abortion. (Click Here to watch the video)

"I believe since Roe vs. Wade has been the law for twenty years, we should sustain and support it, and I sustain and support it." He said during the debate.

Earlier this year, after a video clip of the debate surfaced in the Internet, Romney was quick to respond.

"It… shows what 13 years will do. I'm grayer, I’m a little heavier, and I hope I’ve grown wiser. Of course, I was wrong on some issues back then. I'm not embarrassed to admit it." He said in January.

Another issue being talked about has arisen from Romney’s recent comment that he is a “lifelong hunter.” However, officials in all four states where he has lived say that he never acquired a hunting license.

Romney, though, claims that most of his hunting has been done in Utah where no license is needed to shoot small game animals, like rabbits.

Although he once supported strict gun control measures, he has spoken in favor of gun ownership rights while on the campaign trail and joined the National Rifle Association as a "Lifetime" member last year.

However, Romney has not yet responded to his appearance in Doonesbury. His press secretary, Kevin Madden, said Friday that he had not even seen them, but acknowledges that Romney's presence in a comic strip is indicative of his political presence.

Agreed.

That is sad as is the legislator’s unfortunate accident.

The Father of ZOT and a young Republican legislator and recently widowed mother of a young daughter. Very sad.

What’s the old saying about any publicity is good publicity?

We got a long way to go and the horses aren’t even out of the starting gates yet, imo.

Isn’t it ironic that dhimmis criticize Republicans as somehow (tortured logic) hypocritical for reassessing their stand on something when they do so routinely ( and only to pander for votes and power)?

Is it any wonder that I hate them with a passion?!

Just read the strips.

In the future, is Doonesbury going to exaggerate anything about Mitt?

I stopped reading Doonesbury over a decade ago. Haven't missed it one bit.

Garry Trudeau had a DU mindset (without the profanity) before there was a DU. He was always a liberal, but in the early years he at least tried to be funny. Now it is just relentless advocacy and attacks on Republicans.

At one point he created a new character who was gay, but then had him die of AIDS, which left the strip without any gays, so he had one of the original characters suddenly discover (in his 50s, evidently) that he was gay--this is the guy who is questioning Romney in this series of strips.

I’ve never read his column and really never heard of him until he married Jane Pauley.
