Get an HP. Do NOT get a Dell. I’ve seen too many of them lately with mainboard problems after only a couple of years.

Thanks. Good advice #1. I had been considering a Dell. We already have a hp pavillon ze5170 but she thinks I Freep on it too much and wants "her own". It has been pretty reliable but we had tons of problems with XP and security for awhile. FR was helpful in solving some of those problems which is why I feel comfortable coming here for help.

Can't agree. We've had minimal problems with our Dell Laptops. Get a Dell direct from Dell, or a Toshiba when your local Office Depot is having a sale. I'd also get Windows XP rather than Vista.

Get an HP. Do NOT get a Dell...

Why not? Those Dell laptops catching fire, exploding, burning down buildings, etc., was so last year. They're OK this year, so far.

I concur. I would also add a 30 dollar microsoft wireless mouse.

an hp 6000 with 2 gig of dram, 4 USB, 160 gig hard drive and a 15 in. screen should do very nicely.

go with an intel core dual if you want long battery life.

total cost of all the above is about 1000 from costco.

I concur. My last two Dells have had problems. Same for a friend's. It seems their quality has slipped.

Just bought an HP Laptop and I'm very happy with the hardware, very annoyed at all the extra crap HP larded the machine with. They reserved 10% of my hard drive for their software and I'm not sure yet if I can delete it. Other than that; a positive experience.

Good luck.

Do NOT get a Dell

But if she smokes, she can use it as a cigarette lighter as well when it bursts into flames.

If I have MB problems with my Dell inside of 4 yrs, they replace it free.
After that I’ll buy a board on Ebay and do it my self.
