How Giuliani Can Use Taxes to Win Over Abortion Foes
USNWR ^ | April 3, 2007 | James Pethokoukis

Rudy Giuliani's strategy to win the 2008 Republican presidential nomination seems fairly straightforward: 1) use his 9/11 "America's mayor" reputation to win the national-security conservatives; 2) promote his record of reforming New York City--including cutting taxes and balancing the budget--to win fiscal conservatives; 3) make himself acceptable to social conservatives by promising to appoint Supreme Court justices like Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito who just might vote to toss out Roe v. Wade. Of course, it's appealing to that last group that is most problematic for Giuliani given his liberal record on social issues, particularly abortion. (And it's Fred Thompson's simultaneous appeal to all of those groups that has helped generate presidential buzz for the actor-politician.)

Yet Giuliani could use tax policy to appeal to social conservatives, say Republican insiders I've spoken with. So far on the tax issue, Giuliani has promised to permanently extend the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts, and he spoke favorably about the idea of a flat tax after Steve Forbes joined his campaign.

I’m pro-choice. I’m pro-gay rights, Giuliani said. He was then asked whether he supports a ban on what critics call partial-birth abortions. “No, I have not supported that, and I don’t see my position on that changing,” he responded. Source: CNN.com, “Inside Politics” Dec 2, 1999 http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Rudy_Giuliani_Abortion.htm

ANDERSON COOPER 360 DEGREES (November 14, 2006)

RUDY GIULIANI (R), FORMER MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY: I'm pro- choice. I'm pro-gay rights.

KING: Giuliani supports a woman's right to an abortion, and back in 1999, he opposed a federal ban on late-term abortions.

GIULIANI: No, I have not supported that, and I don't see my position on that changing.

KING: Immigration could be another presidential landmine. Back in 1996, Mayor Giuliani went to federal court to challenge new federal laws requiring the city to inform the federal government about illegal immigrants.

JEFFREY: He took the side of illegal immigrants in New York City against the Republican Congress.

KING: Giuliani opposes same-sex marriage but as mayor, he supported civil unions and extending health and other benefits to gay couples. He also supported the assault weapons ban and other gun control measures opposed by the National Rifle Association.

GIULIANI: I'm in favor of gun control. I'm pro-choice.

Republican Big-Wigs Support Pro-Abortion Event in NY

Pro-abortion Governor George Pataki and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also supports unrestricted abortion, are co-chairs of the 2000 Choice Award Presentation to be held on May 30 at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. The event is sponsored by the Republican Pro-Choice Coalition, a group that is campaigning for the removal of the pro-life plank from the Republican National Platform.

The words of Jim Robinson on pushing a liberal like Rino Rudy.

“How many times must I say FR is a conservative site? We do not support abortionism, homosexualism, feminisim, environmentalism, gun control, liberalism, socialism, etc, etc, etc. When I say I suspect we will become even more conservative than we already are, possibly via attrition if nothing else, what do you think I’m referring to? When FR starts pushing hard and I mean hard against abortion, gay marriage, homosexual education forced on our school children, pandering to illegal aliens, gun control, McCaine-Feingold type usurpation, global warming, etc, etc, even if supported or advanced by the GOP, then I fully suspect certain types of moderate/liberal Republican supporters are probably going to be a little uncomfortable here. We will be fighting for traditional American conservatism no matter who we have to fight against and I’m afraid that’s going to piss off some folks.”

Jim Robinson, 3/2/07

Reading the headline, one might get the idea that principles would be for sale. Sorry, that dog don’t hunt.

Giuliani supports forcing taxpayers to fund abortions.

Nope. Neither of the gungrabbing, babykilling liberals will be the standard bearers in Novermber of '08. Rudy the corrupt can't get over 50% in any poll and the Hildabeast can't get her negatives UNDER 50%. Pushing a RINO like Rudy is a dumb idea, especially on a conservative website.

Then the people who vote to nominate Giuliani ought to be ashamed of themselves for helping to get Clinton elected.

Why couldn’t Fred Thompson have the same or better plank on taxes and still be pro-life?

And the other dangerous thing about him is his open border, pro-illegal stance — this country cannot survive with the continued open-border scenario.

Pro-Illegal Immigration

As Tom Bevan of RealClearPolitics has pointed out, Rudy is an adherent of the same approach to illegal immigration that John McCain, Ted Kennedy, George Bush, and Harry Reid have championed:

"While McCain has taken heat for his support of comprehensive immigration reform, Rudy is every bit as pro-immigration as McCain - if not more so. On the O'Reilly Factor last week Giuliani argued for a "practical approach" to immigration and cited his efforts as Mayor of New York City to "regularize" illegal immigrants by providing them with access to city services like public education to "make their lives reasonable." Giuliani did say that "a tremendous amount of money should be put into the physical security" needed to stop the flow of illegal immigrants coming across the border, but his overall position on immigration is essentially indistinguishable from McCain's."

That's bad enough. But, as Michelle Malkin has revealed, under Giuliani, New York was an illegal alien sanctuary and "America's Mayor" actually sued the federal government in an effort to keep New York City employees from having to cooperate with the INS:

"When Congress enacted immigration reform laws that forbade local governments from barring employees from cooperating with the INS, Mayor Rudy Giuliani filed suit against the feds in 1997. He was rebuffed by two lower courts, which ruled that the sanctuary order amounted to special treatment for illegal aliens and were nothing more than an unlawful effort to flaunt federal enforcement efforts against illegal aliens. In January 2000, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal, but Giuliani vowed to ignore the law."

If you agree with the way that Nancy Pelosi and Company deal with illegal immigration, then you'll find the way that Rudy Giuliani tackles the issue to be right down your alley.

No, Rudy will get the vote, reluctantly, but I would much rather deal with a generic liberal in the Oval Office, than a power-mad Stalinist like Hitlery. To make the comparison, just imagine what Washington would turn into if we had both a Marxist in the WH, and a socialist Congress — that is my total nightmare and COULD HAPPEN unless this country gets its head out of its arse....at the same time, it is tragic that it would get down to all America had to pick from is liberals with no REAL CONSERVATIVE candidate which this country needs so dearly right now....that is also a potential reality and an equal nightmare.

The only difference between HRC and RG would be their approach to the war on terror (a misnomer). Both are power-hungry control freaks. The question is, can we win the WOT and loose our virtues while becoming a PC Socialist society at the same time? Given Europe’s experience, we may win in a short term, but over the long term we will lose. If these two are the best the USA has to offer, our republic is doomed anyway (which I think it is).

Then you have only yourself to blame for supporting a liberal with an R behind his name instead of a Republican.
