Rudy Giuliani is the best presidential candidate.
On Thursday, April 5, there were two articles in the opinion section that led me to this conclusion. One was "Rudy would kill pro-life movement" written by Doug Patton and the other, "A New Yorker Remembers Rudy" written by Ted Rall.
Patton represents the religious right movement that has taken over the Republican Party. Within his article, he even commends Rudy Giuliani as a candidate. However he is ready to jettison a candidate on one issue only. Patton equates conservatism to pro-life. I would say that anyone who wants to have government tell others how to live by their religious standards is not conservative at all.
From Rudy's website: "Rudy Giuliani supports reasonable restrictions on abortion such as parental notification with a judicial bypass and a ban on partial birth abortion -- except when the life of the mother is at stake. He's proud that adoptions increased 66 percent while abortions decreased over 16 percent in New York City when he was mayor. But Rudy understands that this is a deeply personal moral dilemma, and people of good conscience can disagree respectfully. Ultimately he believes that it is a decision between a woman, her doctor, her family and her God.
Ted Rall is as far left as you can get. His article is spent on Rudy Giuliani's performance during and after 9/11 and his personality. He also chastises him for running off panhandlers. It is his opinion. He never mentions performance in other areas such as when Rudy restored fiscal discipline by controlling spending and cutting wasteful programs. He cut the size of city-funded government bureaucracy by nearly 20 percent -- excluding the number of cops on the street and teachers in the classroom.
He cut taxes 23 times in New York and turned a $2.3 billion budget deficit into a multi-billion dollar surplus, while balancing the city's budget. He put more cops on the street and more criminals in jail. He cut crime in half and reduced murders by two-thirds during his time as mayor. He accomplished this as a Republican mayor with a Democratic city council. Could a "self sabotaging, thin skinned bully" deliver these results?
The extreme right and left in politics dislike him as a candidate. To me, this is the best reason to vote for him.
Sorry, it’s just not rational to claim that Rudy Giuliani is a liberal. Moderate Republican, perhaps, on some issues. But he’s been conservative on crime, conservative on taxes, and conservative on the single most important issue facing America, the war on terror.
He’s come out in support of the Hyde Amendment and he says he’ll appoint the same kinds of judges that Bush has.
This does not spell “liberal,” except maybe in the warped fantasies of extremists.
Logic has not proven to be your long suit, judging by what I'm reading on this thread.
I'll keep my own counsel for now on the candidates, other than what you see me post in my own time.

Rudy Giuliani doesn’t support abortion on demand. The Bush administration has done little or nothing to change gun laws. Rudy’s gun policy as president will differ not at all from W’s. Nor has Rudy “embraced the Clinton regime” any more than Bush has with his “hands across the water policy” vis a vis Democrats like Teddy Kennedy.
But in any event, if Rudy got the nomination, who do you think GWB would be out there campaigning for? And if Ronald Reagan were alive, who do you think he would support? The answer to both questions is — da da — Rudy Giuliani.
If Rudy Giuliani isn't a liberal, than there is no such animal.
ROFL...
You’ve got the right to disagree with me. Conservatives can disagree on this. But if someone says there’s no difference between Rudy and Hillary (and I know you didn’t say this), I say they are smoking crack.
"Most of Clinton's policies are very similar to most of mine." - Rudy Giuliani
Are you accusing Rudy of smoking crack?
"Most of Clinton's policies are very similar to most of mine." Rudy Giuliani
Good reply, Rudy is just not my choice, if he the only thing between him and the The Hildabeast, he gets my vote by default.
You’re gonna have to do a lot better than that. Like give some context, for exemple. After all, Bush sits down with Teddy Kennedy on education policy. He agrees with all of the Dems on immigration policy. He even agrees with many Dems on what to do about abortion.
Mayors make a lot of statements like the one you cite. It’s an effort a bipartisanship. It’s political rhetoric.
That’s sort of like, um, bull sh**. Political rhetoric. You’ll find, I’m sure, quotes by Bush sharing ground with Dems.
Not to mention the fact that you’ve offered no context for that quote.
I don’t know if Jim Robinson picks a banjo, or handles snakes, but I have no doubt he would not be in agreement with your views on Rudy. He’s made it pretty clear in his posts that he is astounded that any Freeper could possibly support Rudy. It’s really mind boggling to think that anyone who considers themselves a conservative would support a liberal. Mind boggling!
Listen, any credibility you had, which was very little, completely left the building when you claimed that Rooty doesn’t support abortion on demand.
The context was Giuliani saying flat out that he agreed virtually completely with Bubba Clinton's policies. How hard is that for you to grasp? Do you believe there's a dime's worth of difference between Bill and Hillary Clinton's policy positions?
Absolutely.
That’s not an answer. I have no doubt that Rudy would say his proposed policies would be vastly different. I think Rudy would would say that there would be a huge difference between a Hillary administration and a Giuliani administration.
For one thing, Rudy would fight the damned war. That’s issue one.
Have you even been listening to what Rudy has said about abortion, not just years ago, but this week?
So W would sign an "assault weapons" ban? I think not. Rudy would sign it.
But in any event, if Rudy got the nomination, who do you think GWB would be out there campaigning for?
That's not saying much. W campaigned for Specter over a far more conservative primary challenger.
And if Ronald Reagan were alive, who do you think he would support? The answer to both questions is — da da — Rudy Giuliani.
Please don't speak for the dead.
