(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani remains the top contender in the race for the Republican Partys presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by RT Strategies for the Cook Political Report. 34 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 17 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 10 per cent, former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with nine per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with six per cent. Support is lower for former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, former New York governor George Pataki, Kansas senator Sam Brownback and former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore.
Yesterday in South Carolina, Giuliani discussed his views on abortion, saying, "Ultimately I believe its an individual right and a woman should make that choice. I tell people what I think. I tell them (to) evaluate me as I am and do not expect them to agree with me on everything. I dont agree with me on everything. If thats the most important thing, then Im comfortable with the fact you wont vote for me."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
Polling Data
I am going to read a list of people who might seek the Republican nomination for president in 2008, and I will read the list twice. I would like you to tell me who would be your first choice for the nomination.

(((((RUDY PING))))
lol
I guess I’m a sucker for punishment. Rudy should be toasted right now right? I don’t see any crumbs? LOL!
Nice poll methodology.
Fred’s in a steady third.
I’ll take McCain over Giuliani, McCain hasn’t offended me the way Giuliani has over Chavez. McCain, for all his flaws, at least understands the threat of communism in our hemisphere.
Amazing how Rudy’s lead evaporated once Fred Thompson got in the race.
Oh...wait...
Not bad. Rudy will Get Republicans, Democrats and Independents (Democrat Leaners) That shows that he will do very well and better than the rest.
Third place is the second loser.
It’s gonna take a week or so to see what impact this latest abortion flap will have on Mr. Giuliani’s numbers.
Fred Thompson. CONSERVATIVE leadership, articulate, pro life, pro gun, pro family, electable. Just like Rudy, only opposite.
While I am not comfortable with Rudy's views on the subject of abortion, I agree with him on most of the other top subjects. And I rather enjoy the fact that he is very open on his personal beliefs and views on the various subjects. I don't agree with all of his decisions, but I admire the fact that he lays everything out for people to see.
Unless someone else comes along who is closer to my personal views and has a decent chance of beating the Dims, I am going to stick with Rudy.
He’s polling less than 40%, so he’s is vulnerable to a shift when the field thins out.
Allot can happen between now and the convention.
I’m not counting him out but I ain’t counting him in either.
Appears F. Thompson’s votes come from McCain, Romney and Gingrich.
But not from Guiliani. This will disappoint those who hope a couple of gaffes this week doom Guiliani.
But, but, but, but, but,,,
LOL
An excellent tactical decision, General., and one I agree with.
Stay home or vote third party indeed. Patooy.
If Rudy gets the nomination or not, god bless him, he's really thrown a spanner in the gear box.
Hilarious.
