New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- Saying that Rudy Giuliani's position in favor of states forcing taxpayers to fund abortions could be too much for pro-life Republican primary supporters to support, CBS News is coming under fire for calling the position "moderate." That's despite polls showing a large majority of Americans oppose tax-funded abortions.
In an article on Giuliani's position, CBS News used the headline: "Is Rudy Too Moderate?"
Ken Shepherd, the managing editor for NewsBusters and a former analyst at the Media Research Center, says CBS News is wrong to label Giuliani's pro-abortion views as "moderate."
"The belief that abortion is not only a constitutional right but one deserving of subsidy by tax dollars is hardly a moderate position," he said. "It's a policy position grounded in advocacy of the exercise of the right to obtain an abortion."
"It may arguably be 'moderate' for a candidate to favor abortion rights but with some restrictions, such as a ban on partial-birth abortion, parental consent laws, a ban on public financing, etc," Shepherd added.
"But to defend taxpayer funding of abortion and/or to balk at banning partial-birth abortion moves solidly into the 'liberal' edge of the spectrum on the abortion issue," he said.
The news outlet also makes the claim that "Giuliani's approach hasn't seemed to hurt him in the polls or on the fundraising front."
However, an April 2004 Zogby International showed that 74% of Americans disagree with federal funding of abortion.
Meanwhile, in a CBS News Gallup Poll taken last month, 18% of Republican participants said abortion was the most important single issue to them when voting for a candidate. Among Republicans who cite abortion as a primary motivator in voting, the vast majority are pro-life.
Exactly!!
we are killing our own....
its going to take a massive turnout of patriotic Americans to keep Hitlery or the Osama out of our White house.....

Debate and argument are healthy for Democracy. And as a conservative, I am happy that we are having these fights now — rather than in the General Election. Imagine if we didn’t find out that Rudy Giuliani was in favor of taxpayer-funded abortion until two weeks before the Genereal Election. In that scenario, we could actually have a Republican candidate who is more pro-choice than the Democrat nominee ...
By going through this process, bloggers are ultimately doing two things:
1. Helping inform the voters to make a better decision regarding who best represents their values.
2. Ensuring Republican voters have enough information to nominate a strong Republican candidate who has been tested — before going into a General Election.
Granted, not all bloggers are responsible. That’s how free speech works. But the cure for our problems is more debate and argument — not less.
Enough of the hand-wringing. Politics is tough. Get a helmet!
I got news for ya. The MSM declares Fascism to be Right wing and Communism to be the Left wing which encompasses the entire political spectrum of... Socialism. The ‘moderate’ or middle ground between Communism and Fascism is Socialism. The US Constitution, a Republic and Democracy are not even part of their political spectrum. Get it now?
Rudy’s positions on abortion is the most radical, liberal positions in existence. His views on abortion are as liberal or more liberal than every Democrat’s view. He is nowhere near a moderate on the issue.
As I have previously posted:
Dick Gephardt’s NARAL rating: 30%
Tom Daschle’s NARAL rating: 50%
Harry Reid’s NARAL rating: 29%
Rudy Giuliani’s NARAL rating: 100%
The only thing further Left than this would be taxpayer-funding of ALL abortions.
The title of the article in Life News is listed at the top of this thread exactly as it appears on their web site. If you have a problem with that take it up with Life News, not FR.
“I wish for the sake of this country that our moderators would not allow posts that are openly hostile to any one Pub or conservative canidate”
Ah, the “11th commandment”, cited by liberal republican politicians who don’t want their liberal record brought to light.
For the sake of our country, we can not allow a northeast liberal republican to run the GOP and the country further to the left. We will then be left with two parties- the liberal democratic party, and the liberal republican party.
No sale.
Gee, I wonder what fred thompson’s naral rating is??? The rudybots keep trying to paint him as a prochoice flip flopper.
I’m fairly certain it’s a 0%, but I have not been able to verify it yet.
The don’t call it See BS for nothing.
I haven’t been able to find the actual rating yet, but I did find this:
Based on their abortion rights stance, the following Republicans received a grade of “F”: Elizabeth Dole, Michigan Gov. John Engler, Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, Rep. John Kasich of Ohio, Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, and Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson.
Which would equal a 0%.
I just wanted to leave room in case they reserved F- for 0% ;)
Geesh, how do you turn a ‘Not Constitutional right’ - ‘Bad law’ into pro-abortion?
Fred Thompson has repeatedly opposed Federal funding, opposed Roe vs Wade - He has clearly said that it is not a Constitutional right - and as such, it is a matter that is supposed to be decided by the States.
Moderate? It’s intolerable!
There's no future for conservatism, or the country when folks support a candidate that is openly hostile to both conservatism and freedom.
" we are killing our own...."
You're obviously not referring to the fact that Giuliani would force conservatives to justify and fund abortions. That means you're just referring to conservatives rejecting the folks that never were conservatives. The use of the word "killing" is just some hyperbole tossed in.
I think you misunderstood. Thompson’s grade of “F” came from NARAL.
