A few, not all, were apparently trained to stand around with their hands on their ankles.

People assigned to board and inspect foreign ships in the Persian Gulf have not been trained how to conduct themselves if captured?

That explains why they were not given permission to defend themselves. They probably were not trained to do that either.

Unbelievable.

And a woman on a boarding party?

We’re pretty stupid. No wonder people in the Middle East have little respect for us.

It’s getting more and more ridiculous.

Too bad someone doesn’t grab ole Nancy P. Bet ya Bush wouldn’t lift a finger to get her out. He’d probably, privately tell them - do what you want with her - she’s a terrorist here.

I am quite sure that people in the Middle East have plenty of more demonstrations in store for us. Some will learn and others will bury their head in the global warming.

Curious that the frigate didn’t provide better cover to the boarding parties. Are they afraid of mines ?

Whew...I’m relieved. I thought they might have been trained to give each other noogies in front of the enemy propaganda TV cameras. They had all the dignity of a junior high school lunch line.

News flash for the WP, sailors are usually at sea, with no personal contact what so ever with the enemy (except for the odd SEAL, medic, or EOD personnel). Why would a normal squid need this type of training?

"We're not talking about people in a war environment," the official said. "Therefore, the level of training is different."

Un-fricken'-believable.

And obviously all were trained to raise both hands over their head. Boy, I bet the French Navy is jealous.

I hope these Brits send Iran a video when they get home. Something like: “We had our fingers crossed so our apology doesn’t count”

These ‘’Marines’’ are branded for life as cowards and collaberators.... thanks to their feckless leaders.

Back when I was in the USN, we did receive such training. It was mandatory for anyone going to Vietnam. Included in the training was a POW phase that included being forced into a footlocker size box for a few hours, being hung upside down in a barrel of water and repeatedly dunked, and a number of other stressful activities including being punched and kicked and sleep deprivation. We also were trained in escape and evasion.

That was the old Navy, when I was in (87 - 95) I spent 5 yrs. on a Spruance, and received no training that would help a squid deal with situations like this.

My oldest boy is currently serving, I gotta send him an email and ask him if the policy has changed...I'd bet it hasn't.

Boarding parties ALWAYS have the potential for contact with an enemy.

I agree with John Derbyshire on this one. These guys aren't heroes. Heroes don't willingly play along with their kidnappers. They shouldn't have come into Heathrow in the VIP suite, they should have been snuck in through the back door.

The whole time, I watched these guys on film, smiling and admitting to whatever the Iranians demanded of them, and I thought "These are Royal Marines????

If you can barf in the afterlife, Admiral Nelson is vomitting with disgust right now.

Exactly right. I lost about 15 pounds in a week. Even in those controlled conditions, we still had several people break and read confessions during the POW camp phase. Claustrophobia was the main cause. Some just couldn’t stand being placed in the small box. I can recall being numb from the waist down when taken out. Then there was the larger box where you were confined with a hood on for 8 hours and couldn’t standup or sit down.

It’s was always the GM’s, TM’s, and FC’s that were always so gung-ho when it came to boarding parties. This ST was always standing on the rails waving to them as they sped off in their little rubber boat.
