Mitt Romney Calls Himself a Longtime Hunter - Even Though He's Gone Out Only 2 Times (Rut Roh!)
ABC News ^ | 4/5/07

BOSTON Apr 5, 2007 (AP)— In boasting about his lifelong experience as a hunter, Mitt Romney may have shot himself in the foot.

The Republican presidential contender has told audiences on several occasions, most recently this week in gun-savvy and early voting New Hampshire, that he has been a longtime hunter. But it turns out he has been on only two hunting trips.

Critics said it was the latest example of a White House aspirant willing to say anything to reach the Oval Office.

"Whether he's pretending to be a hunter, misleading people about loaning his campaign millions of dollars or signing a no-new-tax pledge he once mocked to hide his tax-raising record, he'll say absolutely anything to distance himself from his real record," said Damien LaVera, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee.

The charge echoed with similarities to the criticism the Republican National Committee used to level against another Massachusetts politician running for president, Sen. John Kerry, who was his party's 2004 nominee.

In a question-and-answer session Tuesday in Keene, N.H., Romney spoke of his experience with hunting in a manner that suggested a close affiliation with the sport.

"I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I've been a hunter pretty much all my life," he told a man sporting a National Rifle Association cap.

Yet the former Massachusetts governor's hunting experience came during two trips at the bookends of his 60 years: as a 15-year-old, when he hunted rabbits with his cousins on a ranch in Idaho, and last year, when he shot quail on a fenced game preserve in Georgia.

The 2006 trip was an outing with major donors to the Republican Governors Association, which Romney headed at the time.

” (he originally said he had a captured Chinese assault rifle, which probably is true and illegal, but changed it to a demilled bolt gun”

You do remember, I was always curious about the truth about that rifle.

Kerry probably owns more than the shotgun he admitted to and the mysterious Chicom rifle.

He probably didn’t register them when Mass started requiring that, plus fancy permits, and storage requirements.

If he smuggled back a real Chinese AK in full auto, he’d be dumb to admit it (he DID admit it and took it back lol)

Plus, few people admit publicly what guns they own. Given how often he claims to have hunted and shot skeet, I’d expect several real nice shotguns.

He still is an anti-RKBA socialist gun grabber who was not ever in Cambodia even if he carries around a magic hat.

Hey, no argument here — Romney’s actions in gun control are what count, not whether or not he’s been hunting only twice. It’s one reason I find myself leery of him.

"As bad as I hate to admit it, this guy is our version of John Kerry."

He might actually be kerry. I've never seen them together.

"Romney is a good guy he doesn’t need to pander to anyone."

He's pandered and obfuscated his entire political life. He's not going to change now.

"I’m sick of these politicians who never met a gun control law they didn’t like - until they need gun owner votes. Then all of a sudden they’re signing up for the NRA and claiming to be my best buddy. Liars all of them."

Wow! You just read my mind!

"Is there any reason to trust a damn thing any of these guys are saying?"

Nope.

But there's plenty reason to distrust everything they say.

As many ways as George Bush has disappointed me, he's never been a liar.

McCain, Giulliani and Romney lie with every breath.

"Romney’s just another East coast liberal once you strip him of his BS and pretensions."

Couldn't have said it as well.

Nice seeing you on the threads, man!

Hey, don't worry, Bon -- I'm NOT a Romney supporter. Won't be unless he's the R in the presidential race, and I hope he's NOT!!!

The Gun control thing, the government mandatory health insurance set-up he approved in Mass., the fact that he legitimizes crap like "Gay Youth Pride Day" by allowing his office to endorse it, the fact that he may actually believe the hoo-haw he utters about how he's found that working with environmentalists doesn't always have to mean limitations on growth and the economy, which is complete and utter hornswaggle and unless Republicans start butting back SOON against the envirnmental hoax power grab, the WOT will be moot ...

Glad to hear you’re not a Romney supporter — at least not in the primary. And sorry for the rudeness in my post to you.

Romney needs a large set hanging from the tow hitch on his F350. Too bad, large ego! Looser.
