Mitt Romney Calls Himself a Longtime Hunter - Even Though He's Gone Out Only 2 Times (Rut Roh!)
ABC News ^ | 4/5/07

BOSTON Apr 5, 2007 (AP)— In boasting about his lifelong experience as a hunter, Mitt Romney may have shot himself in the foot.

The Republican presidential contender has told audiences on several occasions, most recently this week in gun-savvy and early voting New Hampshire, that he has been a longtime hunter. But it turns out he has been on only two hunting trips.

Critics said it was the latest example of a White House aspirant willing to say anything to reach the Oval Office.

"Whether he's pretending to be a hunter, misleading people about loaning his campaign millions of dollars or signing a no-new-tax pledge he once mocked to hide his tax-raising record, he'll say absolutely anything to distance himself from his real record," said Damien LaVera, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee.

The charge echoed with similarities to the criticism the Republican National Committee used to level against another Massachusetts politician running for president, Sen. John Kerry, who was his party's 2004 nominee.

In a question-and-answer session Tuesday in Keene, N.H., Romney spoke of his experience with hunting in a manner that suggested a close affiliation with the sport.

"I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I've been a hunter pretty much all my life," he told a man sporting a National Rifle Association cap.

Yet the former Massachusetts governor's hunting experience came during two trips at the bookends of his 60 years: as a 15-year-old, when he hunted rabbits with his cousins on a ranch in Idaho, and last year, when he shot quail on a fenced game preserve in Georgia.

The 2006 trip was an outing with major donors to the Republican Governors Association, which Romney headed at the time.

Why couldn’t he just be honest

Because he's a politician. Let's review...how do you know a politician is lying? His lips are moving. How do you know you're politically niave? You think he isn't. There.

Romney’s just another East coast liberal once you strip him of his BS and pretensions. He means to rule, not to govern. Ruck Fomney.

Pandering always gets you in hot water.

So he's a panderer. Better to know that sooner than later.

My first thought too. I just hope they don’t release any photos with him holding a shotgun. LOL.

Accusing a politician of pandering is like accusing a bird of singing.

“I just hope they don’t release any photos with him holding a shotgun”

If I ever get face time with Mitt I’m going to invite him to a CMP match “where he can meet other shooters”.

Think he’ll show up? He’d look good in a Cordura jacket, blinders, and a Garand! What a photo-op!

Wow...From the liberal press: “send out the “Conservatives” to shoot down their own.”

Some serious hunters out there huh?

When I was a kid I went hunting with my Uncle who was avid. He helped me take my hunter’s safety course and I shot guns and hunted for maybe a year’s worth of my life.

I still to this day consider myself Pro-Gun and Pro-Second Amendment. No where in the LIBERAL article that you got this info from, and you need to admit, that you would have never picked up on it otherwise because you are “Conservative”, does it say that Romney stated that he was against the Second Amendment in the past. While it may have been an error in stating “I’ve been a lifelong hunter”, be honest and quote the whole dialogue and you’ll see that there’s nothing there. Even the article is not that deep. It’s the headline that says more than the article.

Look rather than attacking the other people in the race so that you can prop your guy, why don’t you go to your guy’s campaign and ask why he isn’t doing more? Why is their message only attracting the “Wiley” intellectuals like yourselves?

If you’re attack is based on your hate for Mitt Romney because he’s a Mormon then I suggest you go to the other side where they welcome bigots as long as they can do it without being called on it.

You “Conservatives” need to grow up and leave the left wing propaganda and attacks to them. Heaven forbid that your guy comes to the front and they get shouted out for every little asinine thing they do and to top that off it’s your own that start’s to eat at him. I don’t see you guys licking your chops for Rudy and what did he just say about abortion again?

You assume way too much. That or you posted to the wrong person. Gladiators are supposed to be able to control their weapons but you're just swinging wildly.

Good day.

Rudy is honest about himself!

Yep. He doesn't like guns and will sign legislation to ban them.

#1 reason not to vote for either of them...

No... for that, we can quote Mitt himself.

GOA's take on him

Guiliani and McCain are no better.

“...Romney [never] stated that he was against the Second Amendment in the past.”

Romney, like Hillary and Bill Clinton, Sarah Brady, John Kerry, and Ted Kennedy have always stated that they support the Second Amendment. You won’t find a statement from Mitt to the contrary or from Hill, Bill, Sarah, or Schumer.

He has stated, though, that he is opposed to citizens owning “assault weapons” and supported the federal ban, and supported and signed a permanent Massachusetts ban on “assault weapons” and “big magazines”. He reaffirmed his opposition to citizens owning deadly things like “assault weapons” on Steffi’s show in February (Feb 18?) while affirming his support for the Second Amendment.

He also supported the Brady Act waiting period and background check.

So his support of the Second Amendment includes banning poorly-defined classes of firearms, waiting periods, and Federal background checks.

Add to that his statements that he owns guns, and is a lifelong hunter (without owning guns or being a hunter) and I get a pretty clear picture of Governor Mitt Romney’s stance on RKBA.
