President and Mrs. Bush left Washington today and traveled to Fort Irwin, California. There the president met with troops and observed several training exercises that are being developed specifically for operations in Iraq.
President Bush then had lunch with the troops and their families, thanking them for their service and for the many sacrifices they have made.
The president and first lady are scheduled to arrive at their home in Crawford, Texas late tonight to begin their Easter vacation.
In other news, President Bush named Sam Fox to be the new US ambassador to Belgium. (related thread)
Democrats had denounced Fox for his 2004 donation [$50,000] to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. The group's TV ads, which claimed that Sen. John Kerry exaggerated his military record in Vietnam, were viewed as a major factor in the Massachusetts Democrat losing the election.Recognizing Fox did not have the votes to obtain Senate confirmation, [President Bush] withdrew the nomination last month. On Wednesday [today], with Congress out of town for a spring break, the president used his power to make recess appointments to put Fox in the job without Senate confirmation.
This means Fox can remain ambassador until the end of the next session of Congress, effectively through the end of the Bush presidency.
LOL!
Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island
President George W. Bush talks with U.S. Army Captain Pat Armstrong during his visit to the U.S. Army National Training Center Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Fort Irwin, Calif.
You won your toaster fair and square
If Congress fails to pass a bill to fund our troops, the American people will know who to hold responsible.
Wait til the day comes that the troops don’t get paid...there will be hell to pay in DC
I like the “troop funding held hostage” line, and I hope they keep saying it! They aren’t quite making it plain enough, though. I would prefer a sign on the White House lawn as well as one at the Pentagon. LOL!
Our tough as nails President comes through once again!
Thanks for the Dose, jonny!
The imp returns. :)
bet crying kerry is having a fit about that tonight!!!
I certainly HOPE so. ;)
btw.......No frost warning last night...I got up and it was 27 degrees...I quickly covered all my precious plants but a few were damaged last night...I pruned them back and covered them and I am hoping for the best....sigh!
a bunch of my flowers don’t look real good today..more cold tonight. Right now it’s only 37 degrees.
President Bush: THE PRESIDENT: Thank you, all. (Applause.) I've been waiting all day to say, Hoo-ah!AUDIENCE: Hoo-ah!
Thank you for greeting me. General Cone, thanks. I appreciate your service to our country and thanks for leading these men and women. I'm honored also to be with Jill. Thank you for joining us today for lunch. Command Sergeant Kim Boyink has been a generous host. Sarge, I appreciate being with you. Thank you for your service. Thanks for setting such a good example for the enlisted folks.
I often tell people that the backbone of the Army is the sergeant.
AUDIENCE: Hoo-ah!
And I appreciate you sergeants who have joined us here, and I appreciate you serving.
...I appreciate not only those who wear the uniform who are here today, I want to thank your families, too, for coming. It means a lot to me to be with our military families.
...Ours is a remarkable country when people volunteer to serve our country in a time of war. The amazing thing about our United States military is thousands and thousands have signed up knowing full well that we're a nation at war. The government didn't say, you have to do this, you chose to do it on your own. You decided to put your country ahead of self in many ways. I'm proud to be the Commander-in-Chief of such decent people, such honorable people, and such noble people. And I'm proud to be in your presence today.
I’m so excited about the new ambassador! I LOVE when the Pres does stuff like this. :)
What really made me mad was I checked the weather last night before bed and the low was to be only 34 with no frost warnings...now at least two of my rose bushes and one of my hydrangeas were damaged...I hope they survive we are to have frost warnings every night til Sun.
Congratulations. :)
President Bush: I also want to thank the families. I understand how difficult this war is on America's military families.I understand the rotations are difficult for the moms and husbands, and sons and daughters.
I understand that when a loved one is deployed, it creates anxiety.
I also understand our military families are very supportive of those who wear the uniform.
And so, on behalf of a grateful nation, I say thanks to the families who are here, and all across the United States of America. You're an integral part of making sure this volunteer army is as successful as it is today.
it’s suppose to get down to 18 tonight, so even covers aren’t going to help unless you have a syrofoam type ones and i don’t. it’s only suppose to get up to 38 tomorrow. yyp, yup, yup...that global warming is just too much for me!
We're doomed......
(I've been sick for several days and I couldn't get out and do a THING).
I spent all day today outside, hauling bags of mulch and topsoil to cover hostas and rose crowns, covering things with boxes, pots, and straw. It was SO COLD, and I don't know if any of that did any good. All I can say is I did my best...and probably lost a couple pounds doing it. I hauled and spread 10 40-lb. bags of topsoil!
I think I will be going to bed early tonight.
I love him. That's all there is to it.
