JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The House agreed Tuesday to get rid of a state law requiring people to obtain permits from their local sheriff before they can get a handgun.
Supporters say the state process simply duplicates the checks already required by federal law. Sponsoring Rep. Brian Munzlinger, R-Williamstown, said only about a dozen states still have state-level requirements beyond the federal ones.
The bill won initial approval on a voice vote with minimal discussion. It needs a second vote to move to the Senate.
Munzlinger argued the state permit is an inconvenience only to law-abiding citizens and does nothing to curb behavior by criminals who get their hands on guns through other means. He called the state's permit process "flawed, misused and no longer necessary in light of federal requirements."
People wanting to get a gun apply to their sheriff for permits. They must meet certain criteria, including being at least 21, generally not convicted of any crime with a sentence of more than a year, not an alcoholic or drug user, and not been committed to a mental institution.
The permit law is separate from the requirements people must meet to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
Gun permit removal is HB462.

If the same logic were applied to the First Amendment (free speech, etc.) as to the Second, then we would have to submit to a background check before posting opinions here. And the size of newspapers would be limited to protect the environment. But let’s not give the Socialist-Democrats any new ideas...
I see a potential flaw right there. I am a recovering alcoholic and if I told the truth, I wouldn't be able to get a permit. Never mind that I haven't had a drink of alcohol in almost 26 years.
The wording of the article suggests that they're talking about *active* alcoholics.Given that you're sober (for many years) I would think that you wouldn't have a problem.
....26 years. Sounds to me like you’re 100% fully recovered.
:)

Time for a beer to celebrate!
Kidding...
A little bit of sense across the big river. Now if Illinois would get rid of it’s FOID, I’d be most happy.
After all this time, I’m still only one drink away from my next drunk. Although I’m not worried in the slightest, I try not to take anything for granted. I’m still recovering.
