Russia's Air Forces to Buy Dozens of Black Sharks, Alligators
Russia is planning to purchase several dozens of the Ka-50 Black Shark and Ka-52 Alligator helicopters to boost operations of special forces, the ITAR-TASS news agency said Wednesday.
Series manufacture for Ka-50/52 helicopters resumed at a plant in Arsenyev last year after a lengthy downtime.
Choppers of the Kamov design and construction bureau lost a tender to the Mi-28N of Milay design bureau to develop the main helicopter for Russian air forces. Kamov, however, has been chosen to construct choppers for Russian special forces.
A Ka-50 and a Ka-52 are different in crew capacity and equipment. A Ka-50 has place for only one pilot, compared to two people in a Ka-52 which is designed to be used as a commanders aircraft.
A Ka-50 and a Ka-52 weight 11 tons each and can take up to two tons of cargo. Their maximum speed is 300 km/hour. The range is 260 kilometers.

Hmmm.
flying deathtrap
Maybe, but they need close to a hundred if they want to fully modernise their attack helicopter force, revolving around the aging Mi-24 Hind. They seem to have invested more faith in a ‘lean & mean’ version of the Hind, the Mi-28.
Or it could be to improve the type’s chances in export competitions.
Pretty aircraft. Didn’t Kaman play around with twin rotor systems? Or were Kaman’s not concentric?
It looks pretty cool, though.
You’re much faster at the math than am I. :)
:O)
P
Pretty indeed, don’t know if I’d like to catch a ride though...
They can’t seem to get away from the counter rotating blades but at least they don’t look like shopping carts anymore.
The world’s only attack helicopter with an ejection seat system (blades detach).
Don’t fall for the 150 mile figure quickly folks!!!Even the Russians would have thrown it out if it were that low.Kamov’s website gives a range of 1,100 kms with external fuel tanks.Think range with a normal payload would be around 300 miles.

The Hormone?
Wasnt that the name of it?
That’s the name of a Russian naval helo,I think the KA-25.The KA-50 is the Hokum.
Well this aircraft has had a pretty interesting, but rather unfortunate history. It beat out the Mi-28 in most performance parameters, but the Russians still hedged their bets with the Mi-28 as it was cheaper & offered some commonality with the Mi-24.A joint Israeli-Russian offering of the KA-50 almost won Turkey’s attack helo competition in 2000 but for US pressure on Turkey.
I still think Airwolf was the best look helicopter.
The Russians were the first to come up with automatic ejection.

Regards.
